Is your 5-11 year-old boosted before school starts?

Our ped was very hesitant when we asked him this question. It probably won't be available for adults until late Fall, so teens/kids maybe sometime next year? They're not a priority.

WH said yesterday that the timeframe for the updated booster is 3 weeks. So early September.

Oh wow. I’m sorry, that is just terrible. I can’t believe places are still enforcing vaccine mandates/booster mandates. Especially for kids!

Anonymous wrote:Yes. We got all three boosted this past weekend. Our pediatrician recommended it and we trust their guidance.

The risks of myocarditis is very, very low in their age group and they regularly see their elderly grandparents, so if the booster helps reduce risk of transmission even a little, it's worth it.

I can’t believe pediatricians are actually recommending boosters for otherwise healthy kids.

Boosters for those 65+? Sure, that makes sense. But boosting my 7 year old with an outdated vaccine that doesn’t prevent transmission? Not a chance it’s worth it.

I didn't think it was a bad thing.

It was definitely not a sound public health decision. And possibly unethical for them to require it based on the data we have.

We had our kids boosted when it was approved (in May I think?). We all got Covid in July. 5 year old had almost no symptoms, 8 year old was sick for 2 days with cold symptoms and then recovered quickly. Mid-40s DH and I were down for 2 weeks. It was rough. We were also boosted, but back in December.

I will happily get as many Covid shots as they approve because I can't imagine having it without the immune protection. It was awful. We did fully recover, no lingering issues, but I do not want a repeat if I can avoid it.

Is this true? I keep thinking could I be causing more damage w vaccine risk side effect vs covid risk effects

Yes this is true. The risk is pretty low for both, but the chance is MUCH higher with a covid infection than with the vaccine. But it's a very small risk to start, so keep that in mind. Jessica Malaty Riveria is a great resource for this stuff.

Whatever one's personal take on it, CDC had advised K-12 settings on this so that close contacts would not have to be sent home early unless they had symptoms which triggered diagnostic testing and that test came up positive. The American Camp Association recommended overnight camps follow CDC guidance.

CDC recommends everyone eligible get their primary series of COVID-19 vaccines, and receive booster dose(s) when eligible, so they stay up to date on COVID-19 vaccinations.

COVID-19 vaccines reduce the risk of people getting very sick with COVID-19 and can also reduce the risk of spreading it. People who are not vaccinated against COVID-19 are more likely to get very sick. COVID-19 vaccines are safe and effective at preventing severe illness and death from COVID-19.

People who are up to date on COVID-19 vaccines do not need to quarantine if they come into close contact with someone who has COVID-19. This means overnight campers and staff who are up to date on their COVID-19 vaccines can continue attending camp activities if they are determined to be a close contact. Campers and staff who are up to date on their COVID-19 vaccines and identified as close contacts should still follow the recommendations to wear a well-fitting mask and get tested.

Yes. We boosted before camp.

I listen to pediatricians and epidemiologists, which I have in my family, and yes, got my kids boosted 2 weeks ago to time it for the highest boost in anibodies when school starts. This was guidance from an epidemiologist who is doing the same for her children. My children had zero side effects- didn't even get a sore arm.

another vote for Jessica Malaty Rivera and her advice.

No. Kids are vaccinated with the two dose Pfizer and both subsequently had covid. I'm waiting to see if the new vaccine in the fall is available to them.

I’ve been waffling quite a bit but think we will wait for the updated booster. Both of my kids had Covid and it was mild.

Nope. 7YO was fully vaxxed in January (4YO isn't vaxxed at all yet). Waiting to see if there will be an updated, more effective vax.
