Unpopular driving opinions?

Me, I don't think speeding is dangerous by default. The details matter. 80 on the highway? If you're alert, it's perfectly fine. 80 on a local road? Um, no. If it's 35, 45 can be totally safe. IF it's 45, 60 can be fine.

There are TONS of unsafe "slow" (or speed limit) drivers who are distracted, do not have good control, and are unsafe. I say this as someone who's lived car-less for many years, and still lives in a highly walkable area (and walks a lot myself). The person going speed limit but on a hands free phone call, is WAY more distracted than someone going 15 over, but fully present.

What's your unpopular driving opinion?

Marylanders drive just fine.

+1. I know it’s a DCUM meme that Marylanders can’t drive, but my experiences in VA have been worse.

Those who designate themself the merge police and block perfectly usable lane a quarter mile before it ends are very stupid, as are those who won’t let drivers zipper merge from the ending lane.

Yes to all of this!

10,000 x YES!

Have you done much driving in PG County? Because that will change your opinion pretty quick.

If you're not actively looking for windows, then you're going to wait forever - and you kind of deserve to.

+2. If there is room in front of me you should just take it. If you are too scared/nervous to do so, I don’t want to be stuck behind you anyway.

I can’t stand when people try to be nice and in doing so don’t follow traffic laws/norms. Don’t give me the right of way if the law/custom says it’s yours. Just follow the rules - it was designed for a reason!!

You need to STOP ✋️ for pedestrians in crosswalks. None of this slowly rolling towards them as they're scurrying across the road

Pedestrians need to WAIT for the car to stop and come to a complete stop before crossing the road. The pedestrian may feel feel that they have the right to cross the road and force the car to stop, but when they're sitting at home with broken bones and possibly crippled for life, they won't be feeling cocky and that walking out in front of the car was worth it.

Turn signals are options. You pay extra for them… 🤣

People who roll through stop signs near schools should have their vehicles seized and destroyed and permanently lose the ability to drive. No exemptions.

- drivers should have to take refresher courses to keep their licenses
- gas should be more expensive to reflect its true cost to the environment
- more speed cameras and red lights cameras, please. Catch phone use, too. Charge the hell out of people with multiple tickets. Suspend their licenses. They’re killing people.
- texting and driving should come with strong consequences because it’s just as dangerous as driving drunk
- really we just need more buses and trains. Cars are terrible.

Opening your car door on a busy street, without looking or waiting until it's totally clear? Holy crap, how are so many people so stupid?

Why destroy a vehicle when it can simply be confiscated and sold to someone else or donated to charity?

True, most of the time. DC drivers don't nearly hit people most of the time when rolling stop signs. Just occasionally.

The problem with DC stop sign intersections is that DC allows buildings or built elements to be so close to a corner that you can’t see people or in some cases other cars and the crosswalks are so deep. So you stop behind the line and then have to slow roll into the crosswalk to see a car, pedestrian, runner, or cyclist. that may zoom in front of you. And in some cases, you don’t know which car made it to the intersection first because you can’t see them. I always thought it was bizarre when I moved into this area.

Don't tailgate. Dangerous and it just makes the driver in front t want to s. l. o. w. w. a. y. d. o. w. n.

I’ll never understand people who slow down and make the person tailgating even angrier, creating a dangerous situation. A safer driver would move over and let the other person pass.

People are idiots. I’ve never had to use my horn as much as I have had to driving here

I was taught that no one has the right of way at a 4 way stop intersection.

This may be different, but aren’t you supposed to yield to the person on the left if you think you got there at the same time?

I was taught the car to the right should go first when cars stop at the same time.
