Throughout the pandemic, Bowser has done a great job with getting vaccines out, rapid tests, PCR testing. And now with each ward having a COVID center, it's been impressive.

I also like that she was tough on the WTU when they wanted to keep schools closed for a longer period of time, which we now know, and many of us knew then, is a disastrous thing to do to kids.

Bowser has my vote.

Did a great job getting vaccines out? It was a SH*TSHOW. I drove up to Pennsylvania to get mine after waiting weeks and not being allowed to sign up since I was in Ward 3.

She could have done better but she did a good job. People like you were not going to be happy unless you were first in line. It seemed like ages, but it actually only took weeks before everyone had access. I am also impressed by the fire station testing she set up, and now the covid centers. Anyway, it was the progressives that insisted that vaccines should be allocated based on factors other that eagerness to be first in line. If we left it to progressives like R White claims to be, Ward 3 would have had to wait longer.

Yes, I agree that nothing under Bowser has been perfect. And the covid response was still pretty good. When I compared our access to vaccines, PCR tests, rapid tests to some adjoining counties, we were actually way ahead! I can be pissed now that schools were closed so long, but I admit that at the time I didn't want to send my kids. I was scared of covid! My teenager didn't want to go at all, and my elementary kid was learning online ok.

Bowser is not perfect by any means, but we don't have any better candidates.

On schools, Bowser tried to open in Nov and I give her credit for that. Then she continued to push for Feb by getting teachers vaccine access. One of the most interesting political things she did on schools was give principals a lot of individual discretion in reopening. This meant that schools could be flexible based on what the immediate community would accept. The downside to that was that some principals were too conservative; but in places where parents wanted their kids in school, it happened. Given the failure in Nov, I think this was the best way to get kids back & demonstrate it was OK and safe.

Yes it was the best way to go about it. The November plan would have been a disaster

I really like that Bowser didn't support the principals with things like COVID coordinators even though she promised them. More work for the principals is a good thing, right? I mean, it's not like they had other challenges to work on this year. Way to go, half-ass Bowser!

+1, and the point I was trying to make was that her plan in November was terrible and it took a coalition of principals and teachers to prevent that plan from happening. If we want to credit her with being flexible and "responsive" we should also note that it was her lack of responsiveness that caused the initial issues and current ongoing wedge between families and teachers

T. White is the guy pushing the anti-Jewish myth? Uh no. DC deserve good leadership. He’s neither good nor a leader.

He apologized for those comments and hasn't made any anti-jewish remarks since then.

Regardless of whether or not he has made anti-Jewish remarks since then (and his apology tour at the Holocaust Museum does not exactly inspire confidence in the sincerity of his mea culpa), anybody who sincerely believes that the weather can be controlled by a shadowy transnational group - Jewish or otherwise - does not deserve to hold public office.

Oh well...plenty of white politicians say and do harmful things and they don't even bother to apologize. I'm voting for T. White

Yup. Antisemtism is fun.

Engaging in Anti-Blackness is fun for a lot of people on here as well...

Yup. I like to pay close attention to who those people politically support because it provides me a good understanding of which politicians they feel are sympathetic to their views.

Can you expand on that? If someone would chose to vote Republican what would that say about their character or views?

I’m holding my nose and voting Bowser.. I don’t want to kowtow to supporters of homeless encampments, building more housing projects, appeasing criminals through progressive criminal justice reform, and all the other stupid policies that just serve to make this city unloveable and return to the Barry years of disfunction. Sorry to hear you think that’s prejudiced or whatever.

This forum is hilarious and completely underscore how progressive DC is where posters are claiming anyone who doesn’t vote for Trayon “weather control” white or even liberals like Robert White are themselves antagonists to social justice. You people who believe that are impressionable simpletons with poor critical reasoning. I’m not scared to voice my legitimate concerns about crime and being tough on it to reduce it.

I hate Bowser too, but I too am holding my nose and voting for her. Honestly she seems like a stealth YIMBY. Look at all the construction projects going ahead full steam in the city. She is still building bike lanes (maybe not fast enough for some, but seems on the same scale as Adams/Blasio in NYC). I think she is corrupt, especially with city contracts and not hyper-competent; but the alternatives seem much worse. R White is a left-NIMBY with dubious accounting skills and T White is a non-starter/likely return to Barry financial mess.

I don't like this, but in my book, she is the best of the worst.

Her plan in November was good as a matter of public policy. We know now that kids need to be in school, especially at risk. It was tanked for political reasons, by parents who were selfish and didn’t want “those kids” to take anything from them. Well come March 2021 the vibe changed because vaccines were close and parents were starting to wear thin, and the “open schools” position became something you could say out loud to the school moms. Unlike earlier in the year when saying that closed schools were causing harm would have gotten you shocked reactions about “not supporting our teachers!”

At that point what Bowser enabled was to let public opinion effectively reopen schools because she knew she couldn’t be more prescriptive. For me it worked out because finally the school moms agreed with me that we needed to reopen. But yeah, I sure had a private, rueful laugh at the same school
moms who had screamed about a larger virtual class in November, now screaming about how LARLA NEEDS IN PERSON.

You don’t think that people who engage in any-Black behavior do not also seek out politicians and favor policies that also are consistent with their views? I would like to hear the argument for why this would not be the case.

This is pretty bog standard progressive liberalism where diversity and representation matter, unless you don’t proscribe to progressive liberalism and then it doesn’t.

Seems like you are conflating, or purposefully misconstruing, support for representation and diversity, which is great, with a lack of support for homeless encampments that promote crime (they do) and other progressive soft on criminal justice reform policy.

I am conflating nothing. People of all races are complex and complicated. Progressive liberals seek diversity only superficially.

there seems to be a trend where people have a specific complaint with bowser -- too much crime or schools closed too long. and they want to protest that by voting against her and for....a candidate who would be way worse on those issues.

think schools were closed too long? uh, r. white and t. white are not your guys. if we had listened to them, schools would have been closed for most of this year too. r. white in particular has no problem with keeping kids out of school indefinitely.

think crime is too high? r. white and t. white are the stereotypes of politicians who are soft on crime.

the underlying problem here is that not enough people run for mayor. we need more and better choices.

but among the people we have to choose from, it's basically bowser vs. a people who pretty much unqualified to be mayor. if one of the whites were elected, i suspect phil mendelson would become our de facto mayor.

Did a great job getting vaccines out? It was a SH*TSHOW. I drove up to Pennsylvania to get mine after waiting weeks and not being allowed to sign up since I was in Ward 3.

Everyone I know got theirs in Maryland. Either Salisbury or 6 Flags.

Maybe first few weeks, but for the people that had a tiny bit of patience, DC came with a vengeance and outperformed MD and VA within a month. Many Va and Md residents were coming to DC for vaccines and always came to DC for testing. I’m pretty sure I’m voting for R White but Bowser did a great job with COVID.

When you say “weeks”, you mean like 16? Because that’s how long it took for DC to catch up.

I literally do not care how antithetical that may be to the values of the vast majority of progressive, urban, city dwellers who make their home in this town. I do too and it’s clear that they’re misguided altruism and desires for the same types of progressive policies as other major cities don’t work. Look at San Francisco and its recall of Chesa Boudin or its ultra progressive school board members. I just want common sense, bread and butter stuff.

If someone car jacks or mugs someone, arrest them and put them in prison, don’t release them in perpetuity back to the streets.

If a child is showing advanced ability in math, allow them to thrive in an ap class, don’t stick them with remedial learners who would retard their progress.

If building luxury condos, dog parks, roof decks, pop ups and the like increase home values, so be it. Let the market work as it should. Chill out on all the rent control and DCRA bureaucracy as well.

It’s pretty simple. But, as studies show, humans are biologically programmed to root for the underdog, so anything I say is met with reflexive shock. How can this poster be so cruel!!!?? Think of the poor families…no dude, if people can’t hack it, they can move like everyone else. We should have some to of social safety net, but not tons of ineffective programs funded in perpetuity that show no signs of abating poverty. I like the paid leave proposals for maternity leave and some summer jobs stuff, but seriously we can’t subsidize the same generations of families in projects in perpetuity and claim it’s unfair no to.

Although I find this perspective repellent, I appreciate PP laying out there in all its insular, racist, misinformed glory. It represents a real and not uncommon set of beliefs that people who watch a lot of cable news (not just Fox) believe. A lot of wealthy white people don’t like seeing homeless people, conflate homelessness with crime, and believe that violent crime is surging when in fact it remains at historically low rates.

The San Francisco example is instructive. Homicide and violent crime rates are actually down there, while property crimes are up. Obviously, property crimes affect quality of life, but the idea that SF is some violent hellscape is completely unsupported by facts. And to the extent that property crimes are up, it’s funny how progressive DAs and policies get the blame, but no one wants to talk about the incredibly low rates of crime-solving by police. If you’re interested in data and a balanced look at this, check out this article: https://www.sfgate.com/politics/article/Chesa-Boudin-San-Francisco-crime-statistics-recall-16268178.php

Oh get off it. Homeless people are 100% more likely to be drug users and/or mentally ill than non-homeless people. Just the other day, a crazy homeless person approached me and threatened to beat the sh!t out of me as I walked in broad daylight from my job to get food in the middle of the city. That shouldn’t happen. I pay a huge amt of taxes to this city to pay for her benefits. She can stop threatening me w/ violence…that’s also a crime.

The drug using and mentally ill don’t just get to live in tents in city centers…seriously, come back to reality. That is not how we develop a safe and well functioning city. You want f**king tax dollars don’t you? Then don’t make this place totally inhospitable to those of us who ACTUALLY PAY THEM.
