Wilson / Jackson-Reed Teacher saying slurs

I don’t understand how people on here are saying the teacher is in the wrong in some way.

He could have said - "I will not use the word that you used - it is horrible that you are using it outside this class - but especially horrible to use it in this class. The other words you have used are horrible and destructive. Leave the classroom now."

How was he wrong for saying it? The kid said “You’re an n-word.” He replied “I’m not an n-word.”
Because White people should never say that word. Ever. It does not matter the context.

This is a ridiculous take. 99.8% of the time that word should not come out of a white person’s mouth. But this teacher did nothing wrong here. And that student is a POS.
I love how White people will find some minute obscure instance and use it to justify when it's ok to say. And defend this position to the end. Why is this worth defending to you? Why do you want reasons to be able to say that word.

Here's another example:

A kid calls my kid "insert N word". The defend his kid and says, "My kid didn't call your kid "insert N word".
NOT OK. Never OK. You don't need to say the actual word to deny it. It's dumb and all it's going to do is add gas to a fire that's already brewing.

It actually is ok. It’s only become not ok due to a truly absurd extension of cancel culture where black kids and singers make extensive use of the n word, but then go to truly absurd lengths to punish anodyne uses by others where the word is being used to quote what someone else said, and not an insult.
The teacher shouldn't be canceled. I feel bad for the teacher, and lord knows what it's been like trying to teach this kid all year. But it doesen't mean the teacher was right to us that word. He wasn't.

Neither the student nor the teacher should say the word ever. Neither is more right or more wrong in this personal instance. When kids say that word around me, I say you should not use that word it cannot be reclaimed in any way that lessons its impact. You are wrong for using it and participating in a racist structure by using it.
You're kidding, right? This will only be more funny if you say you are a White person. I'm not debating if it's right or wrong for a Black person to use this word, I just think it hilarious that a White person wants to dictate to and lecture Black people on the usage of it. I'm also surprised you haven't been cussed out.

So like, your .2% of the time is when a child says it to get an adult riled up, the adult can then say it?

My .2% includes this bullshit situation and a white person explaining to their own kid that they can never say the word.

What a fun take. "The n word is always wrong, unless a kid uses it while making me mad."

Are you saying this child was sensitive to and injured by hearing this word voiced that came out of his own mouth with such ease? Laughing so hard. And what a weird thing for the AA kid to call the white teacher. Wonder what he meant by it, huh.
It's not weird for a Black person to refer to non-Black people as that word, it happens often. No, I'm not saying the kid was sensitive, this is beyond that kid. Saying that word in a classroom full of students was not the right thing to do. Saying that word as a White man was not the right thing to do. There was zero reasons for him to repeat that word.

Well, that's a shame.

+1 a mature response.

When my kid first said "f%&" to me, I didn't yell back "We do not say f^&*!" I said "do not use that word with me."

"Leave the classroom now!", LOL. That's considered "child abuse". Brush up. This teacher needs to file the BIGGEST grievance against DCPS and laugh his way to the bank. And DCPS and DCPS parents need to do some deep reflection on how far the atmosphere of schools has deteriorated that there can be any debate about what an a*-hat this kid was.

There has been no debate in this thread about that. Everyoen has agreed the kid was 100% wrong. Nobody has defended anything this kid did.

I heard stories of teachers who were accused of abuse for tapping a child's desk with a pencil. The willingness of parents to defend sh*t behavior is just off the chain, to the detriment of all teaching and learning. By all accounts this is a wonderful teacher, in many parents' and kids' eyes. Just, whatever. I hope this teacher gets recourse.

Imma leave the rest of this alone, but I love the part where you're convinced the teacher is going to get some sort of fat payday out of this. That's just charming!

It’s a wonder that there are any teachers at all at that school. The lack of respect is astounding.

There are a number of people who have an odd belief that by criticizing anything a victim has done in any circumstance, you are automatically in support of whatever the perpetrator has done.

. I agree, Jackson -Reed seems to be a very base place. As a parent, I'm horrified that this is where the school finds itself.

NP but this is a video that could ruin this teacher’s career, even if he did nothing wrong.

It's funny that that's your focus though. It's kind of like the "Karen"/birdwatcher scenario last summer--if you chose to focus on the birdwatcher. Not saying he did anything wrong (the birdwatcher), as there's an obvious person to focus on in both scenarios. It's pretty paint by numbers.

Because that's the area where debate can occur. There's no debate about whether what the child did was wrong. Everyone agrees it was wrong, so there's not much to say about it. Areas of potential debate around this issue DO include the teacher's response, and what the school or administration should do about it. And that is why we have a seven page thread.
