Wilson / Jackson-Reed Teacher saying slurs

The student called him the term and he just repeated it to reject it. Lots of smoke but hardly any fire.

Don't worry. Restorative Justice will ensure the continuously disruptive student is told how much his words hurt someone else and then he will be asked to return to the classroom where he will apologize to the teacher and the administrator in attendance will stand there while a man who was by DC law the victim of a hate crime is forced to accept an apology and diminish whatever credibility he had left.

Ironic to defend this at all, when a child who had a long, horrific track record of 'weaponizing language' just slaughtered many children and we are hand-wringing about 'how could it have happened?" when , yet again, all the indicators were there. Maybe as a society we need to step up and address these cries for help from misguided youngsters who are pushing themselves so far outside of the norms of behavior for some reason. Why do we keep burying our heads in the sand as they ask for behavioral intervention and help with their language and deeds?

I'm with you on all of this, except for the initial statement that people are defending the child. No one is doing that.

I don’t understand how people on here are saying the teacher is in the wrong in some way.

He could have said - "I will not use the word that you used - it is horrible that you are using it outside this class - but especially horrible to use it in this class. The other words you have used are horrible and destructive. Leave the classroom now."

It is clear to me you haven’t been in a classroom with an angry kid yelling abusive language. The response to that statement would probably be ‘f**k you, slur again’ and the kid would refuse to leave. And know there would be no consequences for his behavior.

"Leave the classroom now!", LOL. That's considered "child abuse". Brush up. This teacher needs to file the BIGGEST grievance against DCPS and laugh his way to the bank. And DCPS and DCPS parents need to do some deep reflection on how far the atmosphere of schools has deteriorated that there can be any debate about what an a*-hat this kid was.
There has been no debate in this thread about that. Everyoen has agreed the kid was 100% wrong. Nobody has defended anything this kid did.

There are a number of people who have an odd belief that by criticizing anything a victim has done in any circumstance, you are automatically in support of whatever the perpetrator has done.

It's funny that that's your focus though. It's kind of like the "Karen"/birdwatcher scenario last summer--if you chose to focus on the birdwatcher. Not saying he did anything wrong (the birdwatcher), as there's an obvious person to focus on in both scenarios. It's pretty paint by numbers.

Because that's the area where debate can occur. There's no debate about whether what the child did was wrong. Everyone agrees it was wrong, so there's not much to say about it. Areas of potential debate around this issue DO include the teacher's response, and what the school or administration should do about it. And that is why we have a seven page thread.

This kid committed what may be a hate crime and you are focused on the teacher rebutting the kids' slur. And then the next time a hate crime happens you will say "but HOW could this happen?" Nobody is saying the kid can't be educated around this, but focusing on the teacher is pretty much insane.

As an aside, I love when people use middle school civics language as adults. "We as a society..." or "Throughout history, people have..." It's cute, like you're gonna start a lil five paragraph essay.

Has the administration issued a statement?

Everyone here attacking the victim so as the reduce the responsibility of the aggressor. Nice.

The kid will get no consequences and will (might?) graduate one day into a world where people don’t have to and won’t put up with his sh!t. What will become of him then? The teacher will resign and get a job at a school where he doesn’t have to put up with it and DCPS will lose another good teacher. The system will not change. Because of attitudes like those on this thread.

I’m sympathetic to the teacher but I do believe he was wrong for saying the word. if my kid ever acted that way his father would cave his chest in (not literally, just expressing the seriousness). - Black women wirh 2 sons, one who goes to this school. I’m embarrassed by that students behavior.

How was he wrong for saying it? The kid said “You’re an n-word.” He replied “I’m not an n-word.”
Because White people should never say that word. Ever. It does not matter the context.

Sorry, not sorry. Context matters 100%.

This. The kid would say F** you or just laugh in his face. Like you think he would actually care what you are saying and leave the classroom??

+100. Keep putting some blame on the teacher who was the victim and see how that goes. It’s bad enough we don’t have enough teachers, let alone good ones like this one.

Examples of this situation being tolerated all year with the verbal abuse with no consequences is a big reason why the system is bleeding teachers.

That's not how responsibility works. It is not a zero sum game.
