Secondly, I'm horrified by the medical car this victim received. What is the recourse for that? Ambulance service and medical care in this city can be terrible. Can they sue the city?

One is 14 and one is 16. Already back home in the same neighborhood as assault. the victims are not told anything. I would be terrfied of retribution at this point. I garuantee you neither of them will be punished. How come we can't hold the parents responsbile for minors they are supposed to be in charge of. What kind of monster at age 14 tries to beat someone to death AND film it??
Hopefully CPS investigation is mandatory in these types of cases.

How do you know this or are you just speculating?

I would be terrified of them coming back too if I were this family. Frankly, I'd move.

They are minors. Their status is none of your business.

This. MYOB.

Even though the last two in dc closed and had numerous safety violations. The out of wedlock rate in Ward 7 is 85%. I’m sure there’s no correlation there with all the juvenile car jackings going on. Honestly and this is so messed up, but the only way for DC to see an end to its crime rates and issues is for the entire place to just gentrify out the trouble makers. That’s it. We saw massive development under Fenty and several previous mayors and it just needs to continue. We just need more condos and Starbucks and things to price people out who commit literally all the crime.

We can’t because some self-flagellating people, many of whom live a comfortable distance from the trouble in the nether regions of upper NW, plus some of the gentrifiers in dicier areas are happy to overpay property and income taxes to subsidize the ability of the trouble makers to continue living nearby with subsidized or free rents on their dime. We are tired of paying more to subsidize our quality of life problems—criminals, neighbors who keep their property like a junk yard, etc. We just sold and are moving.

Exactly. We are staying put for now because we bought our house nearly. 20 years ago and have an amazingly low mortgage rate. I'm fed up with the noise at all hours, the racing ATVs, the helicopters hovering overhead to chase criminals (only to release them?), the carjackings, the dognappings, the general disregard for human life. I'm a liberal person but you woke folks are making fools out of all of us.

This is why some states have the flexibility to charge minors as adults

Those kids are one hug from a violence interrupter away from becoming brain surgeons.

+100000.

We just need to 100% defund the police and use the money to put all the criminals on the public payroll as "violence interruptors." Problem solved!

If they are a danger to our families it is precisely all our business.

DC has gone the opposite direction, and treats adults as minors.

I get the moral outrage against. violence interrupters but hopefully we will all bear in mind that the fatherlessness of most of these juveniles is a legacy of past incarceration policies; which to me begs for a different response than more of the same ‘zero tolerance’ response.

I hear you about the past. But what do we do about victims who are beaten to a bloody pulp today? Does every murderer get a get-out-of-jail-free card because they had an absentee parent? This vicious attack was completely senseless and unprovoked. And probably even a hate crime.

I agree that parts of our criminal justice systems needs to be reformed, but in this case, why are people even making excused for these violent criminals?

If we’re going to bring morality into it, I can come up with other explanations for the “fatherlessness.”

Past incarceration policies are part of it. We shouldn't give people long prison sentences for drug crimes. That was wrong and more destructive than any benefits it had.
Culture is part of it. Their parents are low class. Culture glorifies teen and unwed pregnancy. Culture glorifies violence.
A culture of low expectations for these children, imposed by hand-wringing UMC and wealthy liberals and the politicians they elect, is part of it. Expect better. Expect them to fail math but expect at least that kids won't turn into violent sociopaths for God's sake.
Why shouldn't we have zero tolerance for extremely violent crimes? What the actual F?

What a surprise. Kids in DC beat up someone being nice to them. So unusual …

Ive have never regretted leaving Petworth. It is a part of the city that has such potential to be wonderful, but the crime and block by block "problem houses" are not improving and in fact worsened from when I first moved there in the early 2010's. It was a place where I stopped feeling safe even sitting in my own house watching TV because of constant "shots fired" I wish the best for this family and all those feeling unsafe in their home neighborhood. It adds a persistent, underlying layer of stress to life.

Anonymous wrote:Why is this not also being investigated as a hate crime? Imagine if four white teens beat a black parent into a pulp for no apparent reason.

This 100%. If four troubled, at-risk white teenagers in South Boston stomped out a UMC black professional for not letting them play basketball it would not only be treated as a hate crime but would be national news as well.

The victim of this crime would be getting a lot more public support and be a beneficiary of tremendously successful national GoFundMe efforts if his story fit a different narrative.

Look, this was a horrific attack and I hope the kids involved go away for a long time.

At the same time, words have meaning. This attack was not due to the race/ethnicity/sexual orientation of the victim. It was due to the rage and bad behaviour of the youths. As for the GoFundMe claim, the victim doesn't want to come forward. That's his right, but projecting some sort of inherent "unfairness" onto that seems weird when it is his choice.

You can’t know it wasn’t without having all the evidence.
