Teens nearly kill Petworth dad because he says they can't use his b-ball hoop after 930pm

The solution - Stop focusing on rehabilitation. Charge them as adults. Send them to prison for the next ten years. If they reoffend after release, lock them up for life. If they decide to become better citizens, great. If not, let them rot in prison. Also, stop locking people up for using drugs. Go after the dealers. Drug addicts do not belong in prison. No one should ever be in prison for marijuana production, distribution, or use. That alone would free us space and money for violent offenders.

If Charles Allen could explain the metrics of the rehab actually provided, and if youth had to arrive to meet these metrics for release - like accept counseling, work towards a GED, put in effort to job training - I would accept rehab as a great pathway. No one from our Council has EVER explained what the rehab is, and what the follow-up is once the "kids" (up to 26) are back in our community. So I agree with you .

So apparently 2 of the 4 were arrested? Any more info on this?

Secondly, I'm horrified by the medical car this victim received. What is the recourse for that? Ambulance service and medical care in this city can be terrible. Can they sue the city?

So will aggravated assault charges on a 14 and 16 year old mean they are actually locked up? Or is this going to be another catch and release? Can the victim file a civil suite against the families? Crimes need consequences.

Me too. I feel bad that they've likely just ruined their lives but....

I understand a fight and even a punch, but to stomp a person after they pass out then just leave them there?

You "feel bad" for the would be murderers? You understand a punch for not allowing someone to use your property? WTF?

No, these kids should be held accountable. They can go ahead and rot in jail.

We'll likely never know unless the victim speaks up. The DC juvenile-crime justice system is conducted almost entirely in secret. Only in high-profile cases that attract media attention -- like when the two teen girls murdered the immigrant grandfather Uber driver in a crime that was caught on camera and broadcast to the world -- are we allowed a peek under the hood.

It's highly likely that anyone arrested for these crimes will be punished at all.

Long jail sentences aren’t going to deter future crimes because I don’t think the people committing them are concerned about the consequences. The $1M question- what are the conditions that create teens who would commit such depraved acts, and how can we address those?

Witnessing and being victims of regular acts of brutality in their own lives often from a very young age. It’s like how violent video games desensitize youth to real life violence. Well what do you think early indoctrination to actual real life acts of violence does to a person?

Don’t know what the answer is, but in the interest of self preservation I tend to do my best to stay very far away from anyone who is raised in such environments. I don’t like chaos and unpredictable people.

Real violence, abuse, and pent up anger is what creates the level of trauma needed to desensitize youth. Not video games.

The criminals did not see the victim as a human being worth respect, stomping him on his own property outside of his child's bedroom - is THAT racism or depravity or both?

Are you for real? I don’t feel bad for them at all. I do feel bad for the actual victim though.

None of the council members will change their stance on the Youth “Rehabilitation” act, there will be more money thrown at “violence interruptors” which studies show are ineffective, there will be hand wringing and of course people shaking their heads and saying “we just need to study the root causes of poverty to help end this.” and nothing will change.

We are in an era of criminal policy reform and rather than incarceration we’ve simply chosen to let certain crime happen, even violent crime if it’s committed by teens (or folks up to 25 in DC) mainly for equity purposes and because statistics are so bad. The city will probably decline back the way it was in the 80’a and 90’s.

In fact, my post doesn’t matter and will be forgotten. Apparently people will tolerate certain amounts of crime because they want to further social justice. In reality, that’s short sighted. Social justice should not include just a massive amount of crime and violent crime and people getting beaten up.

Pretty much. DC government policy is that leniency for youth offenders takes priority over public safety. It’s not going to change anytime soon. This kind of incident goes down the memory hole with a variety of other heinous crimes committed by juveniles, like the carjacking fatality. People need to be attentive to their own personal safety, because the government flat-out doesn’t care about that relative to the well-being of the offender.

That should be terrifying to people. Once individuals take matters into their own hands….

The gentleman from petworth learned a hard lesson of urban life. I wish him a speedy recovery, both physically and from his rosy optimistic view of humanity. Do. Not. Engage the youth traveling in groups. Under any circumstance.

Youth. Ha.

If you don't understand that telling four Black kids you don't know in Petworth at 9:30 PM to stop playing basketball (with no witnesses) is a dangerous situation, then you're not really cut out for DC living. Stuff like this has been happening my entire life. There is no hope, you just have to deal with it.

That's why they tell you to call the police to handle such situations. Do not get into a spat with strangers.

Then you are accused of being a "Karen". The whole thing (life in this city) really sucks.

How do they determine these injuries are not life threatening? They left him in a pool.ot blood with his face crushed.

A "spat"? Asking kids that you helped out a few hours before to stop playing basketball with your basketball in your basket? That's not a spat. That's expecting people to be normal and reasonable neighbors.

And the guy was supposed to *call the police* to get kids to stop playing basketball at 9:30pm? Are you for real?

I think liberal homeowners in DC live in some kind of fantasy land. It seems to be such common knowledge not to talk to random teens right now that even MPD advised to call them rather than approach. These kids are going to sail through DC juvie then have their records expunged under the Youth Act while this guy likely has permanent injuries.

Welcome to DC. This is a very old story/situation.

Probably 95% of liberals, across all races in DC, know not to talk to groups of youths in alleys after dark. It’s self preservation. Of course, everyone who doesn’t understand this is liberal.

On the flip side, about 50% of republicans think DT won the last election.
