This sounds awesome. Hopefully they prioritize teachers, police, firemen, etc.

The proffers for schools are not high enough though in Fairfax county. They need to raise that.

Plenty of islands or nearly-islands already exist bussing wealthy neighborhoods to good schools, so it's not unprecedented to create an island in this case either.

right - like Timber lane being zoned to Mclean?

No, Langley is too far away, like it's in an alternate universe. Marshall is a better choice.

Or parts of Herndon (Bandy Run, e.g.) for Langley?

Wait, what? Herndon High is less than a mile from Bandy Run. South Lakes is closer, too.

Let's not let facts get in the way of this debate.

Or, better yet, understand the facts. Different development. PP is referring to the proposed redevelopment of the Sheraton hotel not the brand-new affordable housing buildings off Spring Hill Road (Dominion Square West).

Send it all to Langley rather than overcrowd Marshall.

There are multiple projects going on in that area. The Sheraton one will be mostly efficiencies, and isn’t being marketed as “affordable housing” (other than a small # of affordable dwelling units required by the County) but bc the units will be so small, it will be affordable just because of the size per square foot. You can read about this at https://www.bizjournals.com/washington/news/2022/02/25/jbg-sheraton-tysons-hotel.html. This will be marketed to young professionals and wont be much of a worry for NIMBYs re school attendance zones.

Then, there is the Dominion West project linked in the Inside Nova article. This is an awesome project that will help fill some serious needs for affordable housing in the area. This is the project that the NIMBYs have to worry about re brown kids going to their schools.

+1.

The School Board should be jumping at the opportunity to assign these projects to Langley to use the excess capacity at Langley and demonstrate folks like Tholen aren’t really clueless, elitist bigots.

Ok, so then new topic. Should the 175 affordable units (not 500 as previously stated) go to Marshall or Langley? Not so dramatic anymore, huh?

Dominion Square West is now slated to be 500 units of affordable housing in two new buildings. The 175 units are units that the BOS agreed to help fund back in February. The project is being expanded.

And yes it would make sense to assign them to Langley.

The argument about creating an island and long bus rides are BS. Just look at Westbriar. The main boundary areas of westbriar are several miles around the school. But it has this island, on the other side of Route 7. So despite the fact, it is no where near Westbriar and is geographically closer to Sunrise Valley, Colvin Run and Wolftrao, these kids get bused to Westbriar. If elementary schools can do it, HS kids can do it.

Anonymous wrote:This is a tricky spot - it's currently zoned for Marshall, but within a mile or so of the boundaries for Madison, McLean and Langley. If FCPS was strategic (and that's a big IF) this would serve as a catalyst for reviewing Tysons' school zones.

And Marshall will probably get screwed and end up with a much higher FARMS rate than all of the other schools listed.

They don’t already?

They do. This would add more to Marshall. But FCPS (and parents not impacted) don’t seem to mind.

Anonymous wrote:Are you talking about the redevelopment of the Sheraton? Because while that will be affordable housing, it will be mostly v small efficiencies/one br apartments. So not a lot of kids, so kind of a moot point.

The article says it will have 2 and 3 bedroom apartments. There will be families.

I'm a Langley parent and not nervous at all. What a stupid comment. I am, however, amused that the OP and others are breathlessly excited about this.
NP

No is excited. I’m pretty sure it won’t happen; they will be zoned for Marshall bc the SB is full of crap.

This. SB are a bunch of posers. They're not going to do anything. They'll be zoned for Marshall. Everyone can relax.

I’m a future Marshall parent. I’m Latina. I am not scared of brown people. But its not a secret that once you concentrate low income kids in one school, there are more challenges. My kids attend such a ES school and in the early ES years, it impacted their education. I’ve found that people usually hollering about NIMBY live in areas where it’s a non-issue/in well off areas.
Btw, I don’t understand the argument of well this school is closer to this area-have you looked at the wonky boundaries in FCPS? If that’s the argument, be consistent throughout the county.
