Should FCPS Reassign New Affordable Housing from Marshall to Langley?

If you look on a map, this school is closest to Marshall. Why wouldn't the obvious answer be to expand Marshall? I don't understand why this is a hot button issue at all.

You’re disgusting.

How is this disgusting? We already know busing is counterproductive. For any demographic.

It’s not busing. Look at the location.

How? Where?

Langley is the furthest away.

Closest - Marshall (by far)
2nd - Madison
3rd - Mclean
4th Langley

You would have these kids get on a bus and pass two high schools to get to their school?

Using the Spring Hill Metro Station as a proxy for this development, I plotted the distances to each HS (rounded to nearest mile) -
Marshall 3 mi
McLean 4 mi
Madison 4 mi
Langley 5 mi

For comparison sake, Timber Lane ES is 4 mi to McLean HS.

Plenty of islands or nearly-islands already exist bussing wealthy neighborhoods to good schools, so it's not unprecedented to create an island in this case either.

right - like Timber lane being zoned to Mclean?

Or parts of Herndon (Bandy Run, e.g.) for Langley?

Wouldn’t they have to move around boundaries from the closest high schools around to make space for Marshall since there’s no space to expand?

You said “especially the demographic that would be in affordable housing.”

Is Marshall at capacity? If so, why would FCPS spend money on an expansion when there is an undercapacity school (Langley) within reasonable distance? Which school would be bumped down the renovation queue to get Marshall more space?

And let's be honest - Marshall recently had a renovation so is in the back of the line. Plus it has no room to expand but up, and that depends on the strength of the existing foundation.
McLean is in desparate need of a renovation/expansion, and is nowhere near the front of the queue.
But Madison is finishing up its renovation/expansion, and Langley has extra room as well. Seems like there are other options here than just expanding Marshall.

Right which means moving boundaries around…send some of Wolftrap homes to Madison vs. Marshall, etc.

Wtf does this even mean? What demographic is that? And how does it take away from the sense of community?

Anonymous wrote:This is a tricky spot - it's currently zoned for Marshall, but within a mile or so of the boundaries for Madison, McLean and Langley. If FCPS was strategic (and that's a big IF) this would serve as a catalyst for reviewing Tysons' school zones.

And Marshall will probably get screwed and end up with a much higher FARMS rate than all of the other schools listed.

Why are some Wolftrap homes going to Marshall vs Madison? That is crazy.
