It's fantastic compared with Fairfax or Springfield. I drive from basically St Elmos to Washington Circle everyday. It's 19 minutes door to door. My neighbor works at State and his commute is 15 minutes.

??? What time? I drove from st. Elmo’s to Logan circle pre pandemic and it ranged from 30-50.

Pretty much 8 on the dot. I drop my daughters at MVCS, take a right on Glebe, a left on RT1, veer off to 110, take Memorial Bridge over the river, a left up 23rd and voila, at Washington Circle. It's a piece of cake. Granted it's Sunday morning but Google says it's 17 minutes right now.

I mean, sure, on a Sunday. And maybe pandemic times. But pre pandemic, it was 30-50 plus leaving at 9, every day.

No. It wasn't. I've been doing this commute for 11 years. Twenty minutes.

During the week between 7 am and 10 am on a regular work day? Highly doubtful. Even if you started at the end by MOMs or RTs you can't even get through Crystal City or onto 395 or the Parkway in 15 minutes from Del Ray, let alone get all the way to Logan Circle in a total of 20 minutes. I mean, if you're gonna lie then at least try to be believable.

I didn't say anything about Logan Circle. I said my commute from St Elmos to Washington Circle is 20 minutes at 8 am on a weekday. It is. I can't fathom why someone would think I'd lie about my commute on an anonymous board but there you go. Feel free to check tomorrow morning. MVCs-Washington Circle, 8 am. It will be 17-25 minutes. Because that's how long it takes.

PP isn't using 395, 14th, or the parkway. They are using 110 and Memorial.

Are you even familiar with the area?

+1

You can't get on the parkway from Del Ray in 15 minutes?? Are you smoking crack? From Swings coffee you can be on the parkway in 4 minutes.

We're about to move into a rental right near the Evening Star Cafe and I'll be commuting to Penn Quarter (right near Capital One Arena). Need to be at work around 8a and done by 4/4:30.

What route would you recommend in the AM and coming back in the PM?
Google maps suggest cutting down to slaters->GW in the AM (and reversed in the PM) but not sure how wise it is to head south to go north at those times and vice-versa.

Thanks for any tips

Whatever this guy posts in response, ignore. Look at his spoofs and troll posts. He is completely unbelievable (like the lady above said, 395 takes you to 110 unless you're gonna schlep through Crystal City) and it is highly doubtful he even leaves his house. If you want good information, then check out NextDoor and FaceBook when you get here. From Evening Star, you're pretty much in the heart of Del Ray. You don't have a lot of good options for a fast trip. I would trust Google maps.

Well, you're tied to 14th so you have to take 395. Go behind the Target and into CC, then right on red at end. You bypass it all. Then jump on 395 there.

110 is south of 14th street, idiot. He isn't taking 395S into DC.

I live in Del Ray and my house is easily double the size of the one in the OP. We paid $1.3M for it in 2018. No garage, but a driveway and an enormous yard.

With Amazon and VT next door, Del Ray is going to be a gold mine for 30 years.

Thanks! By the "end" do you mean Potomac->Crystal and then R onto 1? Or something else?

Yep! End of CC, just before 23rd. Right at Hotels.

It takes 20 minutes to be in NW DC by car. It's not a nightmare of a drive.

Yup. It's almost like the people posting ill of Del Ray may not live here...

I was the PP who made the commute comment and I did live there for many years. If you drive into downtown between about 7:30 and 8:30 (at least before the pandemic), there was a lot of traffic and it took a long time. I’m not sure what to tell you, that was my experience. I didn’t bash Del Ray, I even said I loved it. I just think listing good commute as one of the attributes is odd. If you were further south and could walk more easily to Braddock, then I’d agree. But this particular house is too far.

If you have parking available, it's far faster to drive than to take the train. In fact, having lived in both Northwest and Alexandria, I've found the drive is shorter from Alexandria than either the train or driving from NW DC.
Have you driven through Alexandria recently? It is brutal. I'm pretty zen but I can understand why residents are losing it. And it doesn't seem to matter North/South, South/North, East/West, West/East. It is all bad.

Yes dearie. I actually live and drive in Alexandria every day. It's fine. It's not bad. Maybe it feels bad for Fairfax residents with long drives already, but ain't no one in North Ridge complaining about the commute. Indeed, the only thing that impacts us are dickwad truckers from Hagerstown.

Huh. We live in Rosemont and commuting around town is horrible. Last week I had to go from the medical building on Seminary to King & Washington last week. It took me 49 minutes and I left the medical building at 3:25. Driving back from school pick up in DC last week the back up on the GW Parkway started before National Airport and lasted all the way to Faccia Luna where I went to pick up dinner, and it took roughly an hour. Then getting over to Rosemont from Faccia Luna to home took 25 minutes. I don't know the exact mileage but probably less than 2 miles. Alexandria sucks for traffic and it doesn't matter if you're a live here or you aren't. Neither of those two excursions were made on the trucker day. The truckers were nothing.

Wait a second. You're complaining about the commute from a far upper NW private school to South Old Town to Rosemont commute taking an hour at rush hour? That's on you for poor planning.. There's no where in this entire region you could live and not encounter that sort of traffic at certain times.

What? Where did you get that? RIF. The drive from National Airport to Faccia Luna was an hour. That's all attributable to Alexandria. Jeez. No wonder you like Del Ray.

Try writing clearly next time. You started your story with school pick up in DC. And traffic is certainly not "attributable to Alexandria."

Learn to read:

Driving back from school pick up in DC last week the back up on the GW Parkway started before National Airport and lasted all the way to Faccia Luna where I went to pick up dinner, and it took roughly an hour.

Jeez. Talk about deliberately obtuse and willfully ignorant. I concede that I could have been more clear that the one hour was from National Airport to the restaurant. Getting in and out of DC is a breeze. Alexandria, NOT.

Sorry you have a miserable life and can't write your way out of a box.

The Google maps route isn't unreasonable. Before 8am, it will take you about 4 or 5 min to get onto GW Parkway going from Evening Star to Slaters. GW to 395 will be about 7 min. 14th exit from there. The only downside to going that way is that you can't use the 395 HOV lanes. Those do cut a huge amount of time, particularly when crossing 14th St Bridge. I'd give yourself 30 min, but you'll find it takes less on average.
