Bipartisan Virginia legislature votes to end mask mandates alongside Governor Youngkin

I didn’t vote for him and I think focusing on this law was not a good use of time, but I’ll give him credit as an Exec. for getting it accomplished.

No, Youngkin lied and broke his campaign promise. He promised to leave it up to localities.

Youngkin said he will not mandate masks and vaccines but–unlike some Republican governors–he will not attempt to block localities from implementing their own requirements.

“Localities are going to have to make decisions the way the law works and that is going to be up to individual decisions but, again, from the governor’s office, you won’t see mandates from me,” Youngkin clarified in a one-on-one interview over the weekend.

He has acted in line with leaders from both parties all over the US.

Those criticizing him?

How pathetic are you, to still keep politicizing the f*ck out of the Corona crisis.

This is WITH masking do yeah don't tell me masks are working. At this rate it really doesn't matter since all the kids have already had it! So if you feel that insecure and that's your mask less kid faces huge risk of school in class you need to reevaluate and consider not going to school at all. Because quite seriously the masks have done no good. My own son who is very responsible about masking everywhere caught it. Ironically his sister and parents who are admittedly lax did not test positive so consider this data point carefully.

Yep. Our entire family - triple vaxxed and always masked in school/office/public places - caught Covid over the holidays. Enough with the masks, already.

At this point they're asking vaccinated and have caught covid kids to wear masks all day - it's too much.

Yep. This is us, and until I see ANY proof that someone can catch Omicron twice, or a new variant comes out, masks should be optional.

So what if you can catch omicron twice or 50 times? Masks should still be optional because they obviously don’t work to prevent it.

No, he didn’t. You can keep repeating this lie, but it is still a lie.

I have no problems removing the masks now, based on the number, per CDC guidance.

however, the law is very troublesome as it makes mask optional regardless of the numbers or the nature of the virus. That is bull.

GOPers, we learned one thing from you. We just have to be loud and relentless, and yes, uncivil. Just like you were. And we'll get our way

Hurts to get called out on your lies, huh?

It's funny how injured they act.

I'm not sure who "they" is. I am a swing voter in LoCo, but have not voted GOP since 2016. The fact that you don't think that the law is just as extreme as the people who want to mask regardless of numbers tells me exactly what your goal is: to stick it to the other side. I care about science and facts.

And now a new bill and amendment with BIPARTISAN SUPPORT is passing lightening fast in his state assembly supporting his ban on masks. Youngkin is looking prescient and proactive. Unlike someone else in a white house that is exactly...18 miles from his family farm. The Biden team could take some lessons on supporting effective and needed policies not just wishlists which get no support across the aisle."

Youngkin took this position all during his campaign. It's one of the reasons he was elected.

I know. And half of NOVA voted for him. Petersen and Youngkin are only doing what vocal constituents asked for.

He didn't even come close to "half" in NOVA. McAuliffe wiped the map with him here.

"Obviously don't work?" That's completely false. A properly worn N95 or KN95 gives you hours of protection if you're standing next to someone who's contagious, as opposed to going maskless where it would take just 15 minutes or less for it to be transmitted. Masks make perfect sense in stores etc.

And, there's absolutely no reason why someone who had omicron couldn't catch it a second time. People who had delta and other variants caught it a second time. Natural immunity isn't all it's cracked up to be.

But those who wear N95/KN95 masks are less likely to get it in the first place, and those who are boosted are far less likely to end up hospitalized or dead if they do end up getting it.

May I ask you something in all seriousness? Why do you care so much about this?

Lawsuit filed in federal court. Told ya!

Can't find anything online. Can you please post a link/source? I would really appreciate it. thank you.

All I could find was the Virginia ACLU twitter response that they will amend their complaint. That doesn't provide any proof that a federal lawsuit has been filed.

Anyone have any references on this?

What possible basis would there be for a Federal lawsuit? If there is an issue with how this law was passed, and whether it violates the Virginia constitution, that’s purely a case for the courts of the Commonwealth. Federal courts would reject the case for lack of jurisdiction.

1) nothing whatsoever in the bipartisan law signed by Governor Youngkin restricts you from wearing your N95 mask, or forcing your children to mask (or double mask if you want), and

2) I cannot remember the last time I saw an actual n95 (and I work with a large population every day). Never mind the “properly fitting part.” N95s are not reality.

Everyone wears cloth masks or gaiters - which are next to useless against the rapidly declining Omicron.

I see actual N95s occasionally, but a lot of KN95s. My elementary schooler wears one every day, as do many of her teachers and classmates. I wear one when I have to go into stores, offices, etc.

I’m not taking more chances than I need to.

It's based on the ADA and masks being necessary for making schools accessible to students with certain disabilities. It's a ridiculous argument that is failing everywhere they are trying it.
