Be honest. How old are you. How old do you look?

I guess it’s the marker you set in your mind for what a certain age should look like. I generally don’t think about it. I never look at someone and try to guess their age. Why does it matter? I’ve never meet a 40-year-old woman and thought she looked like she was in her 30s. I’m 47 and look 47.

I think when people think of what those ages "should" look like they are picturing norms from the past.

When really injectables and highlights and old-young people clothing just makes people look exactly their age for 2021. The shrunken hips and legs usually gives it away past a certain age.

I think the bar has been raised over the past few decades. People nowadays wear sunscreen daily, don't smoke, rarely drink, exercise many times a week, eat veg, have skincare routines, use Botox and filler. There's a lot more knowledge on how to preserve one's looks easily available now. Weren't the Golden Girls in their late 40s and early 50s on that show? Most women in that age range look nothing like that.

The actress that played Blanche was early 50s. The other two were in their 60s (playing women in their 50s).

As a 40 year old man who frequently attends school functions and kids' sports events, I regularly meet moms my age who I would have thought are 10 years older than me. It's amazing how poorly white women age. I would say 75% of it is just bad diet and 30 pounds of extra weight. The guys aren't much better but anyone claiming to look younger than they are is living in lala land based on my community in northern virginia. And don't try to claim it's better in MoCo. The median MoCo resident looks 65 years old

I agree with that but genetics also play a role. Having a slim toned body makes you look youthful while having one of the thick to fat body types makes you look like you might have already given birth to 5 kids and are a mature older woman.

I’m very slim, 39, and being skinny probably makes me look older. The past year has not been kind and I probably look early 40s. Who knows though? How you look at a certain age is individual and it’s hard to make these categorizations.

I didn't say very slim I said slim and toned. Being thick or fat makes you look matronly no matter how sexy you may think it is.

Not inevitably. For some folks and some figures (and triple chins), sure. But a fuller face is an asset as you get older. Because of the volume loss that comes for us all, lots of my plus-sized friends in their 40s end up with faces that fit a slimmer person in their 20s.

You come of as extremely weird. A so called "very slim" woman or man? Who defends bigger people ferociously while berating herself as looking old. You sure you ain't another fat troll?

It doesn't matter what I think. Science has proven other races age better.

Uhhh... I guess I should have indicated I was a new poster in this exchange? I'm the one who replied "not inevitably," but that was my first post. But I find you extremely weird for seeming to imply that fat people who think they look younger must be delusional.

Indeed, Rue McClanahan was 51, and the other three (Estelle Getty was the next youngest!) were 62-63, but it was stated or implied several times that Blanche was the youngest-- she was supposed to be so by several years. I don't think it was implied they were in their 50s, except for Blanche, who started the series by going into menopause.

That said, as much of a Golden Girls stan as I am, I admit their continuity was all over the place, lol, and there might have been an episode or two where they implied Blanche was closer in age to them (like 3-5 years vs 10). I mean-- Blanche says in some episodes she had 3 kids, in others, 4 or 5, with some names of kids mentioned only once... it's all over the place. But it was definitely repeatedly emphasized that Blanche not only looked younger, but was younger, than Dorothy and Rose.

I've always looked about a decade younger than I am, since my early 20s (literally, people absolutely thought I was 13/14 when I was graduating college -- look very young for my age). That's still true now, thought he gap has narrowed. My 41 and most people guess I'm mid-30s. It has come up a few times in the last few years because I was an older mom (DC born when I was 39) and in my mom's group everyone thought I was early 30s. When I mentioned I had issues conceiving, one woman said "See, it just goes to show that even younger women can struggle with infertility." But I was the second oldest woman in the group. It also came up when I decided to take a break from work with my baby. My boss/mentor (so someone who I assumed knew me pretty well, and had seen my resume so presumably knew when I'd graduated college and what my prior experience was) advised me not to do it because "you're still at the beginning of your career and and you don't know how you'll feel when you're 40." I was like "uh, I am 40." It was funny and also really disconcerting.

Anyway, I'm white. I just have a young looking face. It is only in the last couple years that I've actually enjoyed people thinking I look younger than I am -- for most of my adult life it's been a liability that has led people to take me less seriously and dismiss things I'm saying. And even now, it's only kind of an asset. I'm married and not dating, so it's not like I'm using my youthful appearance to help me in the dating market. Even when I was, I wanted a man who felt like an equal, not a weirdo who was excited to be dating someone he believed to be right out of college.

I'm 45 but look about 54. I looked good for my age until peri-menopause started at age 41. My estrogen is very low and it shows in my skin. I have deep lines in my face now from the lack of estrogen. I'm also thin and look haggard. Plus the stress of the pandemic has been really hard on me and that aged me about 5 years, I also lost a lot of weight from the stress and worry of the pandemic. Overall I am not looking good at all but I'm trying to gain some weight back.
