Isn’t it mean-spirited to name your dog a very popular baby girl’s name?

Feels mean spirited to me.

OP again. Thanks for all the responses. I am clearly in the wrong here. DD wants to name out new puppy Emmie and I’m glad it’s not going to be seen as unkind or insulting.

Emmie is a super cute dog name! Go for it!

In this world. Tell me your daughter’s name and I’ll respond with, “That’s a dog’s name!” Let me know how it feels.

My uncle’s mom gave her puppy my name when I was a teen. We saw her often.oh, and my opposite sex cousin has my name as well. NBD.

No, everyone knows that is a spider's name. What's wrong with you?

True story. My brother had a beloved dog when we were growing up, named Lucy.

He married a woman who, as a child, had set her heart on naming her daughter Lucy. So when their daughter was born, they named her Lucy. My brother's daughter has the same name as the dog he had as a teenager.

This is super confusing and funny to relatives who remember how badly my brother had wanted that dog and how much he had loved the dog.

My DD has one of those names, and we've met tons of cats and dogs with her name, she loves it and I couldn't care less!

I prefer not to use people names for my pets. I am not sure why, I’ve just never named family pets a “person” name.

And, it does not bother me that my child’s name is a pretty popular pet name (e.g., Lucy)

When I was pregnant with my oldest child, we knew we wanted to name her Susannah if it was a girl. My MIL hated that name and gave us a lot of grief over it. Finally she bought a bunch of goats (she lived on a lot of land) and named one of them Susannah. "You don't want to name your baby after a goat, do you?"

As it turned out, our baby was a boy, but still...

There is quite a big difference between naming a dog a "human" name and calling a "human" name a "dog's name".

If someone named their dog my name or my daughter's name, I would not have a negative reaction. But, I am normal and well-adjusted.

No. The only possible way I could see this being problematic is if your sister or brother just had a baby girl named Ava and you then got a dog and named it Ava.

But generally speaking people names on pets are no big deal

You must be so blessed to have the time to ponder upon such a pressing issue in this day and age. If you want to start a human only name list I would completely support you.

When I was a kid, long time ago, my brother and I captured a tarantula and kept it as a pet for a while. We named it "Suzy," which got us in trouble because that was the name of a friend's little sister.
