Isn’t it mean-spirited to name your dog a very popular baby girl’s name?

How about the name Charlotte for a dog?

My dog is a retired racing greyhound. He had a non-human name, but his dam and sire and their dams and sires all had people names. In fact, one of them was named after a celebrity, both first and last name. We find it funny.

We have friends who gave their dog a lovely human name. When they were expecting their first child, they regretted having given the name to the dog because they liked it so much, they wanted to use it for their baby. They certainly didn’t name their dog out of spite.

We named our dog Gus after my father in law. He was flattered

So awkward when kid always has to be like “I’m going to the park with Ava the dog” or “with Ava the human”. And then wanting to date someone with the same name as your dog growing up?
Not to mention when you’re at the park yelling Ava, come! And all the moms are like “don’t talk to my kid that way!”

I just think it’s so much easier to give dogs names that are not popular with the humans. I think it’s easier on the dog too—it’s one of the very few English words they will learn so is it fair for them to hear it everywhere they go? Poor things think they will get a treat with everyone saying their name!

One of our grandkids is named Ella and so is her girlfriend. It will be interesting if they get married and choose to have the same last name too. Thinking about how confusing the school forms will be. In conversations they are usually referred to as Ella and The Other Ella.

When I was young my family cat was named Bob.

Lol I had a Bob the cat too!

It's ok but better suited for a spider.

In this world. Tell me your daughter’s name and I’ll respond with, “That’s a dog’s name!” Let me know how it feels.

Very different to give a dog a human name than to name your child Scout or Digger.

That said, my DD has a somewhat cutesy childhood nickname, and an acquaintance of mine, upon hearing it for the first time, laughed really, really hard and then told me that was their dog’s name when she was a kid and went in to explain how the dog had been really annoying with this aggressive bark and they were relieved when she died.

That was insulting. Don’t do that.

Yeah, that's rude.

I have a friend- female, 30s- named Alex and she is married to a male Alex. It is a little weird the first time you hear it but clearly they and everyone else moved on from it.

Crazy. I always named my dogs after people names that I liked. I had a dog named Elizabeth. They are just names.

Feels mean spirited to me.

I am so confused by this. What on earth is mean-spirited about naming a dog Ava, Sophia, or Ella?
