| Perhaps Democrats can raise the debt ceiling thru reconciliation, with a proviso that it automatically goes back to what it was as soon as a republican president is sworn in. |
| Of course he is. They want to bankrupt the US, just like Trump bankrupted every single one of his businesses. |
Heard those lower numbers bandied about, but no real commitment from Progressives. For the past 6 months, they hadn't budged an inch. It was $3.5T or bust. Funny how politics works. When you're looking at a strong likelihood of defeat, you're suddenly willing to compromise. But it's not just the amount. Manchin wants work requirements, and Sinema hasn't said what she wants. Maybe not being filmed when she goes to the toilet? |
Lordy. I understand that you want history to suppport your current partisan position but it just doesn't do that. It is nothing but a procedural quirk. Writing the check to pay the credit card charges we have already incurred. |
You’ve got this completely backwards. Sinema and Manchin were refusing to negotiate. Remember Manchins “strategic pause” until next year? It was only when they realized they couldn’t steamroll the house dems and get their infrastructure bill did we start getting these numbers. |
They started at $6T, so the current number reflects significant movement. |
3.5 was always the first salvo. It was always going to end in the ~2 range. This isn't a surprise. If you think the Progressives are the problem here, you aren't paying attention. |
| This is going to end with Manchin and Sinema being forced to nuke the filibuster, possibly after a 30% drop in the Dow. |
| Hey folks -- look it up: when George W. Bush was trying to increase the debt limit during his presidency, he was met with strong opposition from Dems -- including a very vocal Joe Biden. I guess it's only when the Dems want to increase the limit that opposing it is a bad thing. |
Won't happen. Democrats won't let the US default. They'll raise the debt ceiling by themselves. They're the party in power and will get the blame. |
If you make a claim here, you need to back it up. |
It won’t happen because they’ll nuke the filibuster and vote for the suspension. But Schumer is going to keep engaging in the staring contest with McConnell for two weeks until it’s absolutely certain there’s no time to do reconciliation. Then he’ll force them to choose. |
I looked it up and Biden didn’t filibuster the debt ceiling vote. |
