About 90% of what you wrote is stuff that people driving cars do also. I wish we'd work on that with even half the gusto you have for cracking down on ATV riders.

You routinely see drivers in cars jump sidewalks and ride into oncoming traffic on purpose? Where do you live?

I do too. I live in Montgomery County. Drivers have almost hit me many times, while I was driving, biking, and walking. I have never been almost hit by an ATV rider.

Seen it multiple times. Do we have a local police force?

This is a cultural thing. You need to stop judging and deal with it.

You need to stop defending people who put lives in danger.

Can anyone elaborate on the bolded part please?

Young black guys embrace the concept of personal freedom more than other demographic groups.

Good for them.

Yeah, they’re doing super well in life, white guy on DCUM praising the “embracing of personal freedom” by poor black people. Go jerk off to Ayn Rand.

I'm pretty sure that Ayn Rand supporters would not be supporting this crowd.

Near Georgia Ave. I don't really care if they do it on purpose or through negligence.

If we completely shut the street to cars and allowed the ATV guys free access it would be a significant increase in safety for me and my kids.

I'm not a fan of what they're doing, but people driving cars are a much bigger hazard that isn't being dealt with.

*the anti-car biking nut that makes every issue about them and demands everyone congratulate them on their moral superiority has entered the chat*

Seems like that would be more of a pedestrian issue. Unless they're biking on the sidewalks on Georgia Ave., which doesn't seem likely. You might need to put down your afternoon coffee.

This is so far from a public safety issue as to be laughable. We really do not need to start cracking down on this.

You either don’t have much common sense or you have only just moved to a city a week ago. This mess is a slippery slope.

I have lived in DC for 20 years. This is not a slippery slope. They are not hurting anyone or being violent. They are inconveniencing people and showing off, as young people do all the time. Cracking down on this is akin to cracking down on kids hanging out in big groups at malls and annoying the other shoppers. It’s very normal kid behavior and ultimately harmless.

“Ultimately harmless”? Umm. No.

Why are you treating these situations as if they are mutually exclusive? It's not either/or. Cars are a bigger problem because there are more of them. But that doesn't make the ATV riders safe and this behavior shouldn't be tolerated because cars are "more dangerous." How safe would it really be for you and your kids if you're walking down the sidewalk and you see 2-3 ATVs coming right at you at a high rate of speed?? Do you think those guy are going to slow down as they pass you? Or you think they'll jump back into the street to pass you? Ha.

Cars may jump sidewalks if hit in an accident, but they don't jump the curb to ride down the sidewalk the way ATV riders do. Cars typically do not block multiple lanes of traffic the way ATV riders do. Sounds like you haven't actually encountered ATV riders if you somehow think they are a safe alternative.

Perhaps this explains it.

Terrible MD drivers are nothing new but definitely do not justify ATVs roaming the streets. Some of you sound like you want to turn our nation's capital into some hillbilly NASCAR festival. Maybe you should encourage a few Dennys and Waffle Houses to take over some of the more affluent chain restaurants to support your new DC.

Drivers, you mean? Yes, drivers do.

The question isn't, is it dangerous to ride an ATV in a built-up area? The question is, what poses by far the most danger to road users in the area? And the answer is: drivers of cars.

So one wonders why some people focus on ATV riders instead of car drivers.

No. The question IS is it dangerous to ride an ATV in a built-up area? And the answer is obviously yes. That's why it's illegal.

It's also dangerous to drive a car in a built-up area. Also, in a non-built-up area. It kills 40,000 people a year in the US.

Don't know why you're bringing hillbillies and NASCAR fans into this. Rural people know that ATV's and dirt bikes aren't meant for the streets. The morons who do this in DC are not a bunch of white dudes from West Virginia.

And it would be cool to get some Waffle Houses in DC.

Why are they driving an ATV in a built up area? Are they commuting to work?

If you legally allowed to take the whole traffic line on a bicycle, motororized e-bike or a motor scooter, what is different with an ATV? Would it be better if it was battery powered?

Why can’t people do something for fun? They live in adC and want to drive ATV for fun. That’s it. If you don’t like it, stay in your home or move. It is your city but it’s also their city.
