2022 PVS JO Qualifying Times - When will they be published?

- Have good JO birthdays (the August kid is 13 and 7 months at the meet)
- Have a good LC Champs (the August kid is 13 and 11 months at the meet)
-Have a good summer swim birthday (the August kid is 13 and 10 months/11 months)

This is of course totally correct- at the same time, a swimmer like Katie Ledecky or even some of the top swimmers in NOVA, NCap, et al....it never mattered/doesn't matter when their birthday was/is, they won/win regardless. A little different once they get into open territory (15 and up)

Yep, August/September is the best birthday for swim and all the best known swimmers at our top Virginia club have that birthday. There is one exception I can think of and he has a February birthday but is an outlier. Also extremely big and tall for his age. They do exist, but for the most part the kids with the lucky birthdays will dominate age group swim. Less of an issue as they enter high school though. My early February kid is very good but he will never be the top swimmer at SC or LC champs due to his age. December champs is a great meet for him but not as big of a focus at our club.

Interesting, my kid's top swim group happens to have a good portion of December-February kids. Almost half actually, so this is by far the most represented part of the calendar in our group. Only two summer birthdays that I can think of off the top of my head (they are both August though). These kids are high schoolers now, but they have been at the top of their group always.

But as long as kids have a prelims/finals situation to chase cuts, does it really matter? Even if his club doesn’t focus, can’t your kid focus (clear the weekend etc).

My kid’s best meet is always the October open bc he has a November birthday. Doesn’t have finals there but generally gets the best cuts of his age then. Also November makes him competitive for summer LC because he is always age and a half or so, though I have to say he is always grateful when the summer kids who get to swim down in summer league have to swim their actual age for LC). And he doesn’t give up on SCY JOs either - just keeps working for those time standards.

Point being, there are always kids who have more advantages but you make the best of it. I have no problem with age group swimming as organized.

At my kid’s club by 10 even, the very top kids birthdays don’t seem to matter as best as I can see. They are often hitting cuts for 11-12 by 10 in their best event and making finals when they are low age (say 13 in the 13/14 division).

To be fair, your nov bday kid has a pretty good bday for jos, long course championship meet, and summer. He doesn’t need to make the “best of anything.”

Anonymous wrote:Slight hijack here, but this is our first experience with club swim. Are the younger kids, say the 9-12 year olds, actually aware of things like JO cut times and the time standards? Is this something that the coaches talk to them about? I don’t think my kid (9-10 group in one of the big clubs) has any clue about these things, and I feel like that’s for the best, they just care about dropping time and getting more comfortable with the events that aren’t their favorite.

At our club they start discussing the time standards at 9-10 when they do goal setting with the coach. So, that seems to be when most kids gain awareness of cut times. Younger kids may know about them but typically because they have older siblings and/or more experienced swim team parents.

New poster but I wouldn’t consider a November birthday to be advantageous in swimming - maybe not terrible at best. No meets in September and the October Open is not a big meet with finals. The closest big meet is in July for JOs or summer league (which is offset by the holdover summer birthdays).

I think mid August is the idea swim birthday.

I don't think that August great at all. I feel like almost any month there is an issue. I still go back to a June 2 is the best.

Nope, long course zones are early August, so that makes mid August the best

Good birthday for
JOs
Summer swim
LC champs

The real answer is almost none. Kid ages up in august. First meet likely in sept and/or Oct, but those are small meets and not really consequential. Same with November. Great if kid makes a cut but nbd if he doesn’t bc there are lots more chances. First biggish meets are in Dec.
