Fauci has an interview in the NY Times about sports.
https://www.nytimes.com/2020/04/28/sports/fauci-sports-reopening-pandemic.html? Most of the conversation, as you would expect, focuses on professional sports in big stadiums. He's generally not up for that right now, from both a spectator standpoint and the standpint of the players infecting one another. At the end he does touch on youth sports, but again mostly about the spectators: Q: Obviously professional sports are more equipped financially to come back. But there’s also high school sports and youth sports. How can they monitor all of the things you’re talking about? Fauci: It’s still going to be the physical separation, where you might have teams playing essentially with no, or very physically separated, spectators. You could have a lottery. Instead of allowing 5,000 people into a high school or into a college gym if it holds 20,000 or 30,000, you do a considerably lower number if they’re physically separated. You wouldn’t do that now. You have to do that when the infection rate gets so low that when somebody does come up with infection, you can stop it from turning into an outbreak. |
| Oh gosh is he saying no fall sports? |
| I don't see any reason why rec sports can't happen. Especially outdoor rec sports. There are usually only about 20 parent spectators. The kids can use hand sanitizer before and after the event. |
I don't know how anyone thought there would be fall sports given what's transpired so far. I think it's an open question whether schools will even return. |
He's being cautious and saying you need a decrease from what we see now, social distancing in the stands or no one in the stands (basically), and a massive amount of testing capability for players (and he mentions testing players should be a lower priority than testing essential workers, so we are talking much more testing than now). But most of the speech is about big sports: pros with thousands of fans. Little guidance on youth sports |
| Because he has been right about everything |

I wonder if all the kids sports would want to take on liability if the head of the pandemic arms in terms of health says no. My kids are practicing like they are about to get on a field now.
I was thinking maybe early June or July we would be back at the latest. I do think at some point the kids get frustrated and lose interest. Then it will be video games as a sport |
He is NOT talking about youth sports where there are a bunch of kids on a field and parents standing in small groups on the sidelines, not packed into a stadium or gym. Read the quote. Other things he has said are that you can PLAY sports, just not necessarily WATCH them in big groups as a fan. |
Everybody signs waivers without Covid. Why would you expect to be able to sue soccer clubs or leagues for catching Covid, versus, say, breaking a leg? You are always assuming risks on the field. If you don't want your kid out there, don't put them out there. I don't get this. Are you saying that you'd be willing to put them out there, but because the clubs are not going to pay the medical bills, you won't? Huh? |
| If there are no youth sports this Fall there better not be any professional sports either. Otherwise what kind of message does that send? |
I agree. There are obviously a number of parents who (1) really don't want their kids to play youth sports and are tired of the money and time, and are using anything to avoid reentry, which is fine, but intellectually dishonest, (2) don't want their kids to play until a vaccine emerges, and don't want anybody else getting better or fit while their kids sit out, and (3) people who want everybody to put their lives on hold until the vaccine emerges, and who therefore want Denmark, Sweden, Germany, etc to fail in lifting some restrictions. We'll see what happens, but the relentless cheering for worst-case scenarios is simply odd and revolting. A luxury for very wealthy, very anxious people who can work at home and get digital tutors for their kids. Bully for you. Leave the rest of us alone. |
| There will be fall sports. In fact, no one is doing a summer lockdown. |
|
FWIW: FIFA Medical Officer has called for NO SUMMER SOCCER.
https://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/fifa-medical-chief-demands-no-21941111 "Today you need some more patience. Football is a contact sport and one of the first things that everybody says is that you should avoid contact for the moment. “So football can only be possible if contact is possible again.” |

You have 20,000 spectators at your rec sports... wow! |
