These are the kids who will grow up to be contributors to their communities and this country, just like generations of immigrant children before them.

As a tax payer, this “support” doesn’t bother me. These are future teachers, doctors, plumbers, scientists. They’ll give back.

You know what does bother me in terms of freeloading? When taxpayers have to subsidize the healthcare and food intake for workers at incredibly wealthy companies like Wal Mart because the company pays people working full time dirt wages. Or tax cuts for billionaires who mine federal subsidies and tax payer paid infrastructure to build riches. That’s the kind of corporate welfare that every American should be outraged by because there is very little “trickle down” or benefit to anyone beyond a select number of shareholders.

But Trump and the GOP have very effectively kept their base focused on the “outrage” of desperate Latinos fleeing poverty and violence in Central America. Never mind that most illegal immigrants in this country are here because they overstayed their visas and came here through airports, not the southern border. Hence 54+ pages of this thread...

Have you monitored the attendance and drop out rate of FARMs students? By the time many hit secondary schools, grades and attendance fall and graduation is questionable.

This is a good article which talks about the truth behind the numbers - source.org/2017/poverty-poses-obstacle-to-100-percent-graduation-rate-expert-says/589190
Until poverty eliminated, schools won't graduate 100 percent of students, expert says

It focuses on CA, but we all know we have mini CAs in our area. And CA was mentioned as one of the "welcoming" states.

Russell Rumberger, a professor emeritus at UC Santa Barbara who directs the California Dropout Research Project, said poverty is too big an obstacle for some students to overcome. Although the graduation rate has increased, more than 50,000 students drop out of high school each year, he said.

. . .

Rumberger said Latino and other student groups who have historically lagged behind have made “remarkable” graduation gains, but he cautioned that “a high school diploma is really a blunt instrument and it doesn’t really tell us too much about what a student has learned.”

. . .

One of the concerns he wants to explore further is the rising use of “credit recovery” or online courses that students are taking in some districts, including Los Angeles Unified, to make up for more traditional semester-long courses that students may have failed.

“The rigor of that (credit recovery courses) is questionable,” he said, adding that districts still have a lot of discretion in what they require of students before giving them diplomas.

So your perspective is limited. I hate to burst your bubble. The information presented in this article only reinforces what's happening in our local schools.

It ain't working.

You are conflating issues of poverty, the achievement gap, and neglect of public schools in the US - and the articles you’re referencing do, too. Sorry to burst your bubble, but the issue of graduation rates isn’t isolated to new immigrants and LA’s Unified School District is unique in multiple ways that I don’t have time or energy to list for you - it can’t be extrapolated to signal “dangers” of high immigrant school children. Do your research. Dunning Kruger effect on full display in your post.

ODG. The Dunning-Kruger poster is back!

I can't take anything the DK poster says seriously. His/her posts are masterpieces of smug, sanctimonious, faux-intellectual nonsense.

The classic Trump supporter. Don’t like the news because it calls out the stupidity of the administration - fake news. Don’t like that you’re getting called out for acting like you know what you actually know little about - it’s “smug” and “faux intellectual”. You people are a sad and silly bunch.

I don’t “have the time or energy” to deal with imbeciles who love to spout off about the “DK effect,” thinking they are somehow impressing others. Quite the opposite, in fact.

Anonymous wrote:It's funny that Trumpkins are delighted at the thought of "punishing" sanctuary cities by sending illegal immigrants to us ...

You do realize that sanctuary cities are by and large cities where immigrants - both legal and illegal - ALREADY live. They are already here. And many of our communities are rallying to make it possible for them to live their fullest lives and become contributors to our regions. It's not a punishment - it's the American way.

Exactly - it’s NOT a punishment. So why are Democrats so very outraged?? They should be tickled pink.

For the 100000th time...

It’s not that Dems think it’s a punishment, it’s that Trump and Miller sat down to think of a way to punish Dems for the ICE funding for beds. Trump thinks it’s a punishment he can inflict on Dems in retaliation for budget negotiations.

I think he should go ahead with his plan. If ICE doesn’t have the funds for the buses he should loan out his campaign buses and take full credit for his plan. It would certainly make him look like a compassionate guy.

Yes, we know - you've repeated your spiel for the 100000th time. The point you seem to be deliberately avoiding is: SO WHAT if Trump thought it would be a "punishment"? Many of you have repeatedly said it would *not* be a punishment to receive these immigrants. Though I question how many of you actually live in the targeted sanctuary cities - easy for you to say how much they'd be welcome if you're not even living there.

Finally, what's your explanation as to why Democrats refused funding for ICE beds? If beds are needed, why are they not being funded by the very people who insist these migrants are so welcome here?

POTUS planning punishment for citizens of the his own country is OK in your books?? Seriously???

Oh, for crying out loud. You are completely unable to carry on a normal conversation. The fact is: sanctuary cities (and Democrats in general) are insisting this would be no punishment at all for them, and that they would happily welcome a large influx of immigrants. It's not as if they've announced that it *would* be a punishment. So if they're assuring the country that it's no problem for them, then we should take them at their word. Can even a tiny part of your brain comprehend this, or are you going to continue beating this into the ground?

I agree with that PP - the POTUS sitting down to brainstorm ways to punish US citizens over budget negotiations is deplorable. But I guess that what ya’ll like about him. You certainly have no issue with it.

Here's a question that still hasn't been answered (since you brought up budget negotiations): why did Democrats deny funding for more ICE beds? Riddle me that.

I’ll gladly answer after 46 pages of deflection.

It was asked many pages back, and we're still waiting for our answer - which you don't have.

“Why do you care? It doesn’t matter WHY Dems deny funding.” Isn’t that your line?

So no answer. It's reprehensible that the very people saying immigrants are welcome here aren't even approving funding for much-needed beds. Then don't complain when these immigrants are put on buses and either a) deported or b) delivered to sanctuary cities. Serves you right.

Sorry, I need 46 pages before I’ll answer. What page did you first ask?

No worries, the answer is clear as day. Democrats refused funding for more ICE beds because every one of you is a huge hypocrite. Speaking of doing something purely out of spite - that would be Democrats to a t. We have our answer.

But but but...”the intent doesn’t matter”...

46 f#cking pages. Pathetic.

Ah, so you agree that Democrats withheld the funding purely out of spite. Interesting that you accuse Trump of doing what the Democrats DID FIRST.

Not at all. I’ll explain in 40 pages.

No need. We’re good.

Sounds like liberals. You either agree with the entire liberal platform, or you're a Trumpster. No in-between. Which is why Democrats are probably going to lose again in 2020. Normal people are tired of their BS.

This exactly. Guaranteed.

Precisely. It's amazing to watch Democrats pile onto each other if they don't go hard enough on a person or an issue. The liberal purity test.

Agreed.

So now the plan is to “dump” them in Florida... note how FL officials oppose both the Trump admin and the plan, citing the strain on public resources. Tons of common sense.

So now liberals are concerned about strain on public resources? After completely destroying other communities around the nation, THIS one matters? Fairfax County is financially strained by illegal immigration and their sanctuary policies and now it's starting to gravely affect the schools and health facilities, and they are going after McLean and Great Falls residents to try and fix their stupidity.

Do you think rural towns and cities have more resources? I don't understand what the Democrats solution is to this problem. Spread them around? Breaking up families? Build them a special city to live?

The Democrat solution is not in my backyard. Or even 'smarter', to flood red towns with these people hoping to change the demographics, not realizing what that does to their OWN communities. Seems liberals have no connection between logic and feelings.

Why not send them to under-populated communities in the west?

Mar-a-Lago certainly has the resources. Send them there. Many are already working there, anyway.

communities that
1. don't want them, I'm assuming
2. don't have the resources to handle their needs

"Space" doesn't necessarily translate into successful integration.

the latest in FL:

Broward Mayor Mark Bogen and Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw said they were told to expect two planeloads of immigrants each week, starting in about two weeks. The 270 weekly passengers — about 1,000 each month — would be split, with half going to Palm Beach County and half to Broward.

. . .

“The governor’s office was not informed of this decision,” his spokeswoman said in an email. “Florida counties do not have the resources to accommodate an influx of illegal immigrants.”

Broward and Palm Beach counties bracing for planeloads of immigrants from crowded U.S. camps

not enough resources to accommodate this influx

huh . . . translation:

Where will they live?
Who will feed them?
Who will provide them healthcare?
Who will SCHOOL them?

In an April 12 Tweet, the president said, “Due to the fact that Democrats are unwilling to change our very dangerous immigration laws, we are indeed, as reported, giving strong considerations to placing Illegal Immigrants in Sanctuary Cities only....”

“We hope it is not politically motivated, and they shouldn’t shift a crisis at the border to Palm Beach County,” Bernard said.

This is the crux of every issue with Trump and the Rs. There is no will to work with people. No will to compromise. Don't ask for input, just shove it at them. Last time I checked, these counties were part of America. This is no way to run a business, much less a country.

If the feds do this, they need to send money for every kid in K-12 at a minimum (and plenty of it). Building schools and hiring teachers is expensive. The local taxpayers should not be paying for federal mishaps.

Trump must love giving lawyers more money. He is certainly testing the courts. Let's see how far Bret will go.
