I'm not ordinarily so nasty but I have seen multiple posts by PP or others saying people must be insecure, jealous etc and that is why they people are offended at the Crossfield obsession with Oakton. I was just offering a reality check to that specific PP. |
By my count there are 5 extremely large developments going up soon within the Oakton boundary, for a total of 3,117 housing units of various types. https://www.ffxnow.com/2025/02/21/proposed-redevelopments-on-jermantown-road-in-oakton-receive-final-approval/ Redwood Plaza: 88 single family townhouses, 186 triplexes Flint Hill Office Park 1 & 4: 196 townhouses Flint Hill Office Park 3 (3201 Jermantown Rd): 139 townhouses https://www.ffxnow.com/2024/05/29/sweeping-mixed-use-makeover-proposed-for-fair-oaks-business-park/ Fair Oakes Business Park: 420 multifamily apartments, 286 townhouses https://www.ffxnow.com/2025/10/21/developers-plan-to-replace-fairfax-ridge-office-building-with-housing-takes-step-forward/ Fairfax Ridge: 400 multifamily residential units https://www.ffxnow.com/2025/03/20/county-to-study-chain-bridge-road-after-making-way-for-oakton-att-site-redevelopment/ AT&T Site: 854 units https://www.ffxnow.com/2025/06/12/plan-to-redevelop-former-icf-offices-in-oakton-wins-county-boards-blessing/ ICF International Site: 472 unit apartment building, 76 townhouses |
I live here too and let’s be real the only good place that’s close by is RTC. I like that we can to a lot within about 20 min but we aren’t in some amazing fun place. It’s just good old suburbia. |
People with families are more interested in food shopping and kids' activities than the restaurants and bars at RTC. They are fun--but they are not daily needs. We have Air and Space Museum, Frying Pan Park, youth sports, trails, and more. And, Metro with parking lots is within a few miles. |
There are STILL five elementary schools that are closer to KAA than Crossfield. FIVE. |
SAME. Now that high school is in sight for my kids and we are shuttling them back and forth to everything all the time, I really wish we'd chosen a house zoned to a closer high school. I mean, FFS, all of my kids' sports and other activities are in the direction of Chantilly or KAA. It's going to be a real pain in the butt getting a high schooler to and from Oakton and then to Chantilly for activities. I can't believe people do this all the time and want it to continue, LOL! |
KAA won't be overcapacity. South Lakes isn't overcapacity. |
If your house search was anything like ours, you had like four hours after looking at the house to decide if you wanted to put in an offer. We don’t have the luxury of weighing all these pros and cons when a home comes up for sale. |
To finish my thought: even if you had held out for a home zone for Chantilly, there’s no guarantee you would’ve beaten out all the other offers. In a sellers market, you have to act quickly on any home that remotely suits your needs. |

These were the goals for Boundary Review: Ensure equitable access to programs and facilities. Balance available capacity to make the best use of our school facilities. Establish consistent “attendance zones” by removing isolated attendance areas and reducing split feeder patterns. This would increase the likelihood that students from the same neighborhood would be assigned to the same schools which are also the closest option. Minimize travel time for students. |
But this is exactly why we moved here - I don't want to live close to things. We previously lived in a really congested area and even though there were things that were closer, it took forever to get there because of traffic/pedestrians/so many lights. It takes me just as long to get anywhere from where we live now as it did when we lived closer in. And I have a big yard and access to walking trails. And I'm a lot closer to all the wine, LOL! |
And, your kids can go out and play without having to take them to a park. Big plus! |
Your point doesn't work, because as we've discussed at length here, a lot of Crossfield families also live closer to those elementary schools, too. I know I live closer to KAA than a lot of people in Fox Mill Estates and people zoned to McNair and Coates. It's not about the schools, it's about where people live. |
Yes, and I said earlier today, we did look at houses zoned to Chantilly and South Lakes, too. In my mind, all of these are good high schools. I am definitely in the minority but I wouldn't be upset with my kids going to South Lakes EXCEPT for the fact that I prefer an AP school. |
I counted 4100 near Whiele Ave metro for south lakes, but somehow the solution people are proposing is to add other areas to SL under 3 proposals? |
