We have a rising 9th grade boy who is torn between these two schools. He's top of class academically, but also VERY into sports. We'd love feedback from those with experience at these schools.
Vibe at the schools? Social scene? Academics? Opportunities to play sports? College counseling? Thanks so much! |
| Which sports? |
| I would base it on commute - which one is easier to get to? |

Potomac is much better academically
|
| No question Landon is a better sports experience and college placement is very close. Go through yourself -landon posts results. |
| We had this dilemma a couple years ago. Chose Landon for a variety of reasons - parents, peers, commute, sports, etc. both are great and you have to see what works overall for u and ur family. |
| Potomac is a pressure cooker academically. If your DC's self-esteem is wrapped up at all in grades and being in the hardest classes, it's a grind that never stops. Some kids are able to let that go, enjoy their friends, and be okay with it. But for most, it is very competitive. If your DC is looking to be recruited in his sport, very little of this happening at Potomac. Unfortunately, the school seems to be moving toward becoming a stronger sports school and this is a massive mistake. They need to get the stress levels under control before they start layering on another area of pressure for these kids. |
BS |
There seems to be a Potomac booster trying to drum up interest with these multiple threads. Strange |
+1. Maybe their Advancement/Admission folks are all over here? |
How do the parents and peers compare between the two schools? |
You are kidding me! The average SAT at Potomac in 2019 is 1440 for Potomac and 1250 for Landon!!! Source: www.lotusprep.com. Google: best 34 high schools in the DC area |
| I do not want to hurt your feelings, but Landon is not even in the same league as Potomac in terms of academics. Landon is much better in sports. My DC is not at Potomac. |
It is a fact that the most academic boys in last year's 8th grade class applied out. At least 2 went to Sidwell, another to Potomac and then maybe more than one to STA. Others that stayed were waitlisted. Not sure if this is the case this year, but I'd ask a lot of questions about who is leaving before 9th this year. |

In terms of matriculation, Potomac has 20% of its graduates going to Ivy or equivalent colleges (top 16 schools in the US news and World Report ranking, excluding Norte Dame and Vanderbilt) from 2015 to 2019. Google Potomac matriculation and set up a simple Excel file to confirm this, if you do not believe.
Tell me the number for the same statistics for Landon. |
