Potomac vs Landon

1) which sport your son likes matters in this instance. For boys, Potomac has a strong soccer team, baseball team, basketball team, track and lacrosse team- not a good football team. If your kid is gung ho football and wants to get recruited, Potomac may not be the place. Potomac has a many Ivy and top 25 D1/2/3 recruited athletes in a variety of sports though.

2- Does your kid care about making varsity? Landon generally fields strong teams across most sports and probably has more sporty boys, but as a result there may not be room for a freshman unless he’s a rock star. Potomac has many sporty boys, just fewer than Landon since it’s not all boys. So there is a chance as a freshman to make varsity

3) which academics is your kid drawn to? Each school has a unique set of differentiators by subject.

4) does your boy want to interact with girls at school

5) where do you live? Honestly if I were in MD I would choose Landon and if I were in VA Potomac- you are at school so much for sports and events that proximity to home becomes a real thing. If I were in a central DC location wouldn’t be a factor

OP's question was from four years ago...

Potomac is on the rise too but at a cost of embracing a lack of community and total inflexibility as to student needs.

This. Signed Potomac Parent.

I am going agree. My DC has work over spring break and some major tests assigned right when they get back so of course they are studying on top of work. Spring break should be a complete break.

100%. Distorts the notion of a break. Know any healthy adult workaholics?

I mean they have TWO weeks off…I don’t think it’s horrible to have some work to do across 14 days (half a month). Most aren’t going on a two week vacation and those who are- well I am sure they can find some time to squeeze in some work.

Actually a lot of Potomac families do take lavish vacations over school breaks, so piling a ton of schoolwork over break seems to defeat the purpose of having a break.

There should never be any work over middle of the year school breaks (outside of catch up or remedial work when needed). Do you work on vacation?

Glad someone finally mentioned the Landon situation on this board. I’ve been wondering why there hasn’t been much discussion.

What is the Landon family asking for?

Some random person resurrected a four-year-old thread and everybody is answering like OP just asked the question. Do you all not look at the dates? With that said, my college junior said over break to me: I wonder if I would have been happier in high school going to Landon instead of Potomac. Then lamented that he's okay about it, but wishes he didn't feel anxiety and dread every time he passes by the spot where the Potomac bus picked him up every morning. I told him there's no sense looking back. I know it was very difficult to attend Potomac. But you built character, made a few lifetime friends, and are stronger for it. If it were up to me, which it never was, and I could do it over, I would never have sent him there. Not sure Landon would have been much better. These privates are just cesspools in my opinion.

Is the pressure cooker environment still the same at Potomac or has that improved with the new administration?

5 kids going to Harvard in one year, so what do you think.

The admissions for the 20 or so spots in 9th grade has hundreds of applicants.

BS

There seems to be a Potomac booster trying to drum up interest with these multiple threads. Strange

+1. Maybe their Advancement/Admission folks are all over here?

You are kidding me!

The average SAT at Potomac in 2019 is 1440 for Potomac and 1250 for Landon!!! Source: www.lotusprep.com. Google: best 34 high schools in the DC area

What a joke of a source. A test prep company. Even Niche has them almost the same yet you chose this obscure site?

Potomac lists 1394 as the average SAT and 32 average ACT on their school profile on their website. I can't find the same info on Landon's site.
