National Training Center Invitation

How does this work? DD’s teammates are receiving invites. Is it politics? Coach favorites?

US soccer has a scouting department, Clubs will typically give names for scouts to watch. Scouts choose who is selected.

The National Trainings center is to Identify national team prospects.

Very few will make it to a full camp

If your DD gets an invite, it must be merit.
If your DD doesn't get an invite, it must be politics or the coach playing favorites.

While there is definitely politics to the process, the general concept is that coaches can usually get a player invited to the first one. After that, ongoing invitations are based on the evaluation of the staff on site (and also politics).

One of these scouts will come to your game. They have received a list before from the coach of who should be selected. They then pick. They do NOT look outside the coaches recommendations. It's completely political.

We (FCV team parent) had parent contact local scout. This parent wanted to know what her daughter can do to "improve" and get called up. Daughter went to the special recommended speed and agility trainer. Parent campaigned relentlessly to coach. Parent called local scout and updated the progress of her daughter. Ta Da! Call up within a month.

I suppose if you believe coaches routinely recommend weaker players over stronger ones, you can say it's entirely political, but that's not generally the case in our experience. When my kid attended a bunch of these, he recognized kids from several other teams he'd played against, and all of them were the kids he thought were the best on their teams. Coaches who recommend duds will ultimately find that the evaluators don't respect their opinions and scouting ability.

Oh yeah, and I know coaches who lobby for their players relentlessly, or throw a fit when they get cut. It is political. And it's also political if a player goes and gets played where they will shine or is put some random position they have never played.

It means that there may be 20 players all equal, and some get the invite and some don't. Some clubs are more heavily represented. When my DD used to go, we saw more players from an ECNL team that was in the bottom third of the conference than from teams better placed. Now, they were ECNL players. And ECNL and DA girls are generally speaking at a higher level, but you can't tell me the losing team has a larger number of better players. That's politics.

(My DD aged out. That is another complaint I have. How can you stop looking freshman year of high school. Girls continue to develop)m.

The scout for the area is also a parent for a local club.

And prior to that, the scout was a coach at a local club. So to your point, these scouts always live around here and get invested in their own children or their own club's success.

Someone on the ODP thread mentioned corruption... let’s take a vote which is more corrupt: US Club Soccer vs US youth soccer.

It makes now sense why some kids that are selected for elite team like ECNL when they lack skills and are not at elite level. The club favors the scouts kid and the scout invites the club players to NTC.
