Healthiest non dairy milk alt

Trying to consume less animal products and would like to switch our milk for a plant based one. But there are many options and they seem to mostly fall short on nutrients. I want one that has the most nutritional benefits (protein and calcium are a plus) with the least amount of extra ingredients and processing. What would you recommend?

What are you looking to replace it for? Like glasses of milk, or milk in cereal, or just a splash of milk in coffee, or use in baking?

Oat milk doesn’t have a lot of nutrients but it’s very cheap and easy to make at home.

Mainly for chia seed pudding, overnight oats, smoothies, and maybe a small glass to drink here and there

Oat is best for you and gentlest on the environment. It won't have the protein though without additives. Get your protein from other sources. If you don't need milk for the easy protein and fat then just give it up in general. And if you do need it for the protein and fat then there are no equivalent alternatives without additives.

Oat milk has nearly double the sugar and carbs as regular milk and zero protein. So it doesn’t seem like a great alternative to me.

My casein intolerant kid drinks Ripple milk. Also sometimes half of a Ripple protein shake or Evolve protein shake. I add a tablespoon or two of heavy cream to it.

At Starbucks, she has a children's hot chocolate with coconut milk, which is very high sugar with very little fat or protein. It's just a treat, nothing healthy about it.

I agree this doesn’t seem like a good recommendation

None are worth the trade offs that come from investing processed foods. For what you’re listing as why you use the milk, it makes more sense to keep using it except for the smoothies. Use water as the liquid.

Plant based diets are great when you’re talking about eating whole foods not highly processed “health” alternatives.

I use coconut milk for my coffee - so it's less than a gram of sugar for what I put in it (2 tbsp and yes I'm anal so I measure it out) and it's tasty.

I get almond or oat milk lattes - but those are a once or twice a week treat. I like the taste better than dairy milk and I find dairy milk to be inflammatory.

Oat milk has protein... because oats have protein.

Oat milkcontains about 3 grams of protein in a 1-cup serving, compared with 8 grams in cow’s milk and 7 or 8 grams in soy milk. It also “does not contain all nine essential amino acids, which soy and dairy do,” Sheth said.

Pea milk also has more protein than oat milk, Sass noted. “[Pea milk] is high for a plant milk, on par with cow's milk,” she said.

However, oat milk contains more protein that almond, rice, or coconut milk, which all contain 1 gram or less per cup.

Oat milk is bad for you because it contains canola oil which is highly inflammatory. On the Oatly brand label it’s listed as “rapeseed oil” because apparently that sounds better than canola oil these days...

My favorite has been this almond/cashew/pea protein one that DH found. It's higher in calories than just straight almond milk, but it's 10 g of protein 2g carbs, and 7 g fat. And I like the creaminess of it.

We've tried that. It tastes chalky. But a lot of them do.
