Over-rated on what criteria? Be specific. I bet you can’t. |
DP. I always use she/her pronouns on this board unless someone explicitly states they are not. It's dc urban moms (or was initially). I like that the generic default here is she! Also, apologies for adding to this thread that has gone on way to long! |

I can only speak for TJ as DD goes there, but Michigan is a safety school, period.
TJ gets like 30-40 acceptances there a year but only like 3-4 go. UVA on the other hand is far more competitive and any TJ student would go there over Michigan in a heart beat. |
If true, this is only because of in-state tuition and perhaps a preference to stay near home. |
Perhaps that’s why UVA has fallen to #5 among the publics. |
Absolutely. Do you honest believe anyone would go to UVA out of state from Michigan or California if they had the choice between their superior instate public and a lower ranked school? |
My TJ kid graduated from TJ few years ago in the top 1% so I can speak to this. Neither Michigan nor UVA would be desirable for those in the top ~40% but Michigan would be preferred since Michigan has a better reputation for CS/Engineering. |

My TJ kid got a 20K scholarship from UVA in an EA offer, then withdrew her Michigan RD application on the next day.
Michigan is a great school, but not worth the 80K OOS cost. You do not need a college degree to figure out the difference between 20K and 80K. I think the opposite is true too. it is hard to imagine any Michigan kids would choose UVA if given a Michigan offer.

| Isn’t TJ a center for Science and Technology? Since UVA is no powerhouse in either, it’s obvious that instate tuition is the major consideration for most students to attend. That Michigan offers admission to that many students at that particular school tells me a few things. The students at TJ are very strong. It also proves that Michigan doesn’t practice yield protection, since you say so few students would ever consider attending. |
True. Dartmouth is truly the lowest ivy. People think it's Cornell because Cornell stats gets dragged down because of its agriculture and hotel schools. But Dartmouth is hands down the easiest ivy to get into. |
Of course your kid did. I would do the same thing. It’s just a shame that your instate flagship is relatively mediocre in STEM, assuming that’s why he/she attended decided to attend the high school. To say Michigan is a safety school is an insult and a ridiculous comment at the same time. It has a sub 10% admit rate for OOS applicants. A safety school for TJ would include virtually every student who applied, highly unlikely. |
Once again I ask what evidence to you have to make that determination? I don't think you have any. |
Very sorry that despite Dartmouth being the "easiest ivy" to get into (your words not mine), your kid STILL didn't get into Dartmouth. Hope you can find solace in wherever your student landed. |

If money is a consideration, there are other strong choices. UVA absolutely practices yield protection - I have seen it in action by close family members. |
