New gas tax in Virginia hurts Latinos!

Gas taxes really hurt poor people more than any other group.

Northam said he would tax the rich. Why not raise the property tax on homes valued over 500,000?? An extra 2% ??

Poor people are less likely to own cars than any other group.

OP probably lives 100 miles from work and drives in every day with her Range Rover and has to fill up every other day. Hey here’s an idea, get a more fuel efficient car or stop complaining about paying for the roads you’re using.

So a 500k house is for the rich in NOVA? Property tax money stays local and FX might add 1 to 8 to the rate. Virginia hasn't changed the LCI formulas so the massive influx of Central Americans is not reflected in the state allocations. Moreover there's a missing category for schools - those with limited or no formal education. FCPS talks about drop out rates, attendance.

68 SFH below 500k in this county and most are in Alexandria, Springfield, Herndon.

So Latinos aren't supposed to get tax increases? Some how immune while everyone else pays?

Latinos should get state subsidies or vouchers to reduce the cost of gas.

VA gas tax is the 11th lowest in the nation.

Gas tax in CA is almost three times higher, and they have many more Latinos.

Evidently this is not an issue that Latinos care about, or CA Latinos would have voted against it.

Maybe just add a tax to cars that are worth more than 20,000 dollars??

+1 THIS.

Just add a huge personal property tax rate on cars valued over $20k. Make it proptional, so the rate goes up at the value increases. A $25k might be $500 annually, whereas a $30k car would be $1500, and a $35k car would be $3000, and so on.

That seems fair to me.

Uuuhhh that assumes they can legally vote. Anyhow, gas tax is a consumption tax. Pretty fair but yes it hurts those with less income the hardest. Not sure why Latinos are being singled out here. Plenty of blacks, Asians, whites, and indigenous persons that are poor too. It is kind of why public transportation was created.

Nah, public transportation was created because it's an efficient way to get people from here to there.

Welcome to life.

Gas taxes should be quintupled across the country to encourage more carpooling, public transportation building and less fossil fuel consumption. You'd see a huge cry for public transportation if people could no longer afford to drive.

Spoken by someone who lives in the city or suburbs. Not at all practical for us rural folks.

No one is forcing you to live in the middle of nowhere, you do that by choice. You could choose to live in a high rise next to transit and not own a car, but you don't. So you can pay for your choices.
