New gas tax in Virginia hurts Latinos!

Since this is a flat tax, irrespective of your income, it is going to affect those with lower incomes disproportionately. It's just like the sales tax, although the state doesn't (shouldn't) tax "essential" goods. The gas tax is also a legacy tax. It will need to be replaced as we switch to more and more electric vehicles. The theory was that the gas tax helps to pay for roads and electric vehicles no longer "pay their share." That's one reason you might need to increase gas taxes, but that's a pointless exercise because the move to electric is happening and not going away.

As the world moves to electric, states will need to add a road tax to electric bills.

Everyone (U.S. citizens) is created with equal rights. This does not mean everyone has the right to be equal financially. In fact, the definition of freedom means that everyone has the right to pursue whatever they want with as much or as little effort as they want. This in and of itself will lead to inequality, which is inherently a good thing as we are all free to measure our success and happiness by however we define it. The gas tax was put forth for two reasons: 1) as a usage based means to pay for roads; 2) as a disincentive to using more and more gas. It works for this. Yes it ends up using a disproportionate of poorer people’s income, but not that much given the relatively low cost of a gallon of gas. Also, all Latinos are not poor and all poor are not Latinos, so correlating the two is simplistic.

Look at all the multitude of skill sets and jobs found in a city. Compare that to whatever it is they do in rural areas, farming or whatever. Not even close in terms of variation. Farming could be entirely automated by now if it weren’t for farmers.

I am supportive of our commonwealth doing more for poor people whether they are latinos in Arlington, or white ex coal miners in southwest Virginia.

I do not think doing so by keeping gas cheap is the best way to do that though.

Just add a huge personal property tax rate on cars valued over $20k. Make it proptional, so the rate goes up at the value increases. A $25k might be $500 annually, whereas a $30k car would be $1500, and a $35k car would be $3000, and so on.

That seems fair to me.

Car tax is based on the value of the vehicle and sales tax is based on the price paid. Latinos or the massive infusion of 1st TPS then illegal immigration essentially altering composition of schools and need for social services? A population block that mean Virginia as a state needs to wake up and realize NOVA can NO longer afford to support ROVA.

How many hundreds of millions in bond money has been issued by Fairfax County paid for out of local taxes for the population?
