A mother and daughter from the suburbs of Chicago were taken hostage by Hamas during their trip to Israel to celebrate a Jewish holiday season and a birthday party, according to their rabbi.

Judith Raanan and her 17-year-old daughter, Natalie Raanan, traveled to Nahal Oz in Israel, about a mile from the Gaza border, to celebrate a relative's 85th birthday and Simchat Torah.

"It has been confirmed to the family that both Judith and Natalie are alive and are hostages in Gaza," Rabbi Meir Hecht of Evanston, Illinois, told Fox News Digital. "The Israeli government and the State Department confirmed that information with the family."

I am glad they are alive. Is there a historical precedent for taking hostages in this part of the world? From Iran on, the hostage taking of civilians is constant. Or is it just part of the terrorist mindset-what you do when you don't want to fight actual armies? Pick on the defenseless?

Maybe if our foreign policy wasn’t so imbalanced they wouldn’t need to take hostages . People take hostages when they want leverage in a negotiation

People take civilian hostages when they are amoral.

Robert Malley lost his security clearances and is suspended from work after suspected collusion with Iran.

There are several others in his former department suspected of collusion with Iran.

But of course I understand what you are saying. They did it because, waaah, they didn't have another way. So since Hamas took the hostages what would they "want" in a negotiation? Ludicrous stuff like domination of "Planet Earth, and to break things? Nothing constructive or realistic that would actually benefit Palestinians and regional peace. Ya know? It's hard to take the idea of Hamas "negotiating" at all seriously.

As individual acts, exactly. I'm just wondering why it happens so repeatedly in this region. Is it historical, like going back to the Bedouin practices? it's such a weird and $tty thing to do.

How is it possible that Hamas built so much infrastructure under UN observer and aid worker noses? It really makes me question their role. I know aid needs to get to Palestinians, and yes, I think it should be conditional. If the aid money is going to buy arms, it's sort of pointless anyway.

Remarkable restraint? Because the only acceptable response to Jews is ethnic cleansing, genocide and land theft.

This is what institutionalized terrorism looks like:

“Losing land is the price Arabs understand”
https://forward.com/fast-forward/564999/israeli-minister-gaza-must-be-smaller-saar/

By the way their “restraint” is due to an incapacity to wage war on multiple fronts. Uncle Sam was caught unprepared and cannot send enough support in time.

Did you have a service contract with the State of Israel?

The money is going to stop sometime, that is a fact. We do not need Israel to win this senseless battle.
There is no way for this siege to continue with the world watching.
Thanks to diplomatic efforts, Bibi has had to delay ground combat.

Escalation with other countries involved will cause a spike in price of oil and lead to a long depression in financial markets
US cannot finance this suicide

Nope. Throughout history, people take live hostages as a desperate way to get powers that be to either pay them or listen to them .

It’s not psychopath behavior. It’s actually the most accepted form of warfare because it allows for negotiation and victims are alive throughout .

Keep acting shocked or surprised as to to why Hamas is doing it. It’s because they want leverage. What can one do? Bomb them to smithereens and kill the hostages as well. Nope.

That’s the point . They want to keep hostages alive and release them in exchange for something

And I'm not insulting Bedouin. I have no doubt they'd be appalled by "modern hostage taking". It's grotesque. The Bedoouin are generally wonderful hosts with a cool culture. Just wondering where this idea that normalized it (even in the terrorists fantastical minds) came from? Iran definitely laid the groundwork in the 70. What a$$hats that "government" is.

Except Hamas really misplayed this. Their savagery and clear intention to existentially destroy Israel has gone beyond negotiating for hostages. My heart bleeds for the hostages, but Hamas made this a fight to the death. Israel will do everything to retrieve these hostages., but they are not going to make great concessions to Hamas this time. I dont see that happening, do you? The Gilat situation is kind of "fooled you once". Just don't see it happening ever again.

The moral of decapitating, dismembering and crushing thousands of children under the crushing weight of buildings.
Of bringing champagne and crackers to watch “the fireworks” over Gaza.

You are so naive it’s unbelievable. The money is only going to increase by 100 folds. As a young Joe Biden once said “Israel is the biggest, best US aircraft carrier in the world, and it’s unsinkable. The $3B is the best money the US spends”. The US is trying to buy time and cover for Israel as the whole region is on edge. A calmer, more organized genocide and land theft.

Is this surprising though given the tribalism coming out of Israel?

America needs to invade the entire country, and force both people to live under one state named Jerusalem . Integrate the schools with Palestinian and Israeli schoolchildren .

Anyone who incites violence on either side gets automatic 10 years in prison. Hefty Fines for any verbal hate speech.

laughs in 2000s and 2010s Iraq

Not the same. That was war, an Israeli-Palestine occupation would be to end war. A civil administration ran by the UN or the US is not as far fetched as it sounds. I doubt Palestinian or Israelis would resist a US occupation if that is the only way they can all be safe.

Yeah, and afterall, the US includes Israeli Americans and Palestinian Americans. We were all attacked by Hamas. Common Cause, eh? I wouldn't let the UN run it though. They were all over Gaza while all of these Hamas weapons were stockpiled in the first place!

You do realize that Israel is also attacking Americans in Gaza?

You do realize that Hamas murdered more than 30 Americans last Saturday? And abducted upwards of 20 more? And that the only reason that there are any Americans stuck in Gaza now is because Hamas won't let them out?

They wouldn't be dead if Israel wasn't oppressing Palestinians.
