APS - Who is running for School Board?

Sandy raised a good point about how losing FLES means that the special ed teachers lose that time to collaborate with the lead teachers. I didn't even know that was a thing but it makes total sense.

OK, but you don't keep FLES just because it has a significant side benefit. You keep FLES because it's doing what it's supposed to do (there should be some way of measuring its success), and get rid of it if it's not (and can't be fixed).

Agree. The collaboration could happen during any time segment where the kids are being taught or supervised by someone else. If they eliminate FLES do those extra teacher positions go away or do they morph into something else?

Agree. I'm not sad to see FLES cut unless it could be revamped to be more effective, which I don't see happening in this budget environment. And honestly, I'd like to see immersion get cut too. Use those resources to improve ESL and other programs/offerings in neighborhood schools. There is a lot of diversity in Arlington, obviously, and a lot of students from a lot of backgrounds and languages who could benefit from those increased resources. I don't understand why there remains a focus on an immersion programs to serve the Spanish-speaking population (other than privileged Arlington parents who like the idea their precious one is getting a bilingual education). I totally understand the benefits of learning a foreign language at an early age, but the immersion programs take a lot of resources that I think could be better deployed elsewhere.

Well he finally wised up and signed off. That was not a pretty set of exchanges. He never should have tried to engage in that forum, which shows all the more that he's not ready for SB.

Has anyone noticed that a handful of staunch Key supporters who were literally screaming about their concern for the low income kids in the Key neighborhood last fall are now standing behind this guy’s thinly veiled stance of “teach more so my privileged white kids don’t fall behind on their Harvard trajectories.” I wasn’t on their side with the swap but I wanted to believe that some of them were expressing real concerns for real people. How naive of me. It really was just about keeping their kids on Key.

I’m glad a global pandemic hasn’t stopped you from obsessing over your dislike for Key parents and posting your feelings about it in DCUM.

There are a few representatives earning the dislike one interaction at a time. Unfortunately they claim to speak for the entire school, despite being a minority of the parents there.

No one is advocating to keep FLES! Move along.

Sorry, but not everyone who thinks learning should continue is a monster. The sanctimony of the original poster ... geesh. Get over the weird Key-hating fetish.

I thought Steven's answers on the SEPTA questionnaire were surprisingly nuanced and informed.

Ha! I'm not that surprised. He strikes me as very intelligent and even (mostly) well intentioned. I just think he hasn't run a strong campaign (the emails thing has been a little weird and he seems a little out of touch). I also really don't like that he thinks one of his big selling points is that he has the youngest kids.

Btw, did anyone catch it the other night at the ATS/Key forum when Priddy tried to claim that he's the only one with black children and, therefore, the only one who can understand some of those issues? Wonder what Symone thought of that argument?

I agree with all of this. Not sure if he has a chance, but he is growing on me - to my surprise!

The Arlington Education Association endorsed Cristina. https://aeava.org/

I didn't hear Priddy say that. In fact, I've never heard him refer to the racial make-up of his family at all.
He did say he's the only one with kids in elementary and middle school, I think.

NP poster: I've heard him say at least 2 or 3 times that he is the only one with children of color, including at the Dems School Board debate. It frustrates me that he and Krieger are using these "Breakfast Club" type of designations. Yes, Krieger may have the youngest kids and Priddy is the only one in the Dem School Board caucus with children of color. Ok. But, Sandy is the only one with grandchildren. Cristina is the only one without children. Terron is the only one with stepchildren and the only one with (step)kids in high school. (And, btw, Terron's wife and I have mutual friends and she's apparently pretty open about her son being openly gay, so maybe Terron is the only one with a LGBTQ child). But what does any of that really matter? While parenting gives people a different perspective on school issues, I don't think it should be a qualifying or disqualifying attribute.

I wasn't even going to bother to vote but read the article on arlnow and decided I would vote for that guy

At least he has an idea and an opinion and shares them.

Thought Sandy would have had that one locked up.

And only Cristina. I've not been as impressed by Sandy as are others on here, but I am surprised they didn't endorse her too. Cristina is young and less experienced than others, but the experience she has impressed the teachers. And I think she has the best information online. I'm going with Cristina, Sandy, and Terron for my top three.
