OK, but you don't keep FLES just because it has a significant side benefit. You keep FLES because it's doing what it's supposed to do (there should be some way of measuring its success), and get rid of it if it's not (and can't be fixed).[/quote]

Agree. I'm not sad to see FLES cut unless it could be revamped to be more effective, which I don't see happening in this budget environment. And honestly, I'd like to see immersion get cut too. Use those resources to improve ESL and other programs/offerings in neighborhood schools. There is a lot of diversity in Arlington, obviously, and a lot of students from a lot of backgrounds and languages who could benefit from those increased resources. I don't understand why there remains a focus on an immersion programs to serve the Spanish-speaking population (other than privileged Arlington parents who like the idea their precious one is getting a bilingual education). I totally understand the benefits of learning a foreign language at an early age, but the immersion programs take a lot of resources that I think could be better deployed elsewhere.[/quote]
