Harvard tell Trump to pound sand

It’s fine to have a completely independent organization that has an international focus but then they should play by different rules than colleges for American students play by.

It is a private school and can admit whoever it wants.

And you know what, all of those public flagships also want the best and brightest from around the world. And all of those foreign students pay full freight and offset the tuitions for the instate and scholarship kids from the USA. A win-win that if it goes away, will put hundreds of schools out of business.

Yesterday, the federal government announced that it has revoked Harvard’s certification under the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) and stripped the University of its authority to sponsor F- and J- visas for international students and scholars for the 2025-26 academic year. The revocation continues a series of government actions to retaliate against Harvard for our refusal to surrender our academic independence and to submit to the federal government’s illegal assertion of control over our curriculum, our faculty, and our student body.

We condemn this unlawful and unwarranted action. It imperils the futures of thousands of students and scholars across Harvard and serves as a warning to countless others at colleges and universities throughout the country who have come to America to pursue their education and fulfill their dreams. We have just filed a complaint, and a motion for a temporary restraining order will follow. As we pursue legal remedies, we will do everything in our power to support our students and scholars. The Harvard International Office will provide periodic updates as new information becomes available.

The government has claimed that its destructive action is based on Harvard’s failure to comply with requests for information from the US Department of Homeland Security. In fact, Harvard did respond to the Department’s requests as required by law.

For those international students and scholars affected by yesterday’s action, know that you are vital members of our community. You are our classmates and friends, our colleagues and mentors, our partners in the work of this great institution. Thanks to you, we know more and understand more, and our country and our world are more enlightened and more resilient. We will support you as we do our utmost to ensure that Harvard remains open to the world.

Sincerely,
Alan M. Garber

And they will win. Trump is blatantly violating the constitution.

Exactly, you can't single out one university for this obviously punitive action. My fear is he's going to say "Alright, no more foreign students anywhere", because it would be just like him to do so.

And if he does that, it will but a thousand schools out of business for this fall.

Diversity of political view is not a type of diversity the Ivies will tolerate.

Seems like it’s Trump that’s being intolerant, dear.

How many conservative speakers were invited to share their views at Harvard, dear?

Here’s the thing I don’t get, dear. If all of these Ivies are liberal indoctrination machines, why do these rich conservative people keep wanting to send their kids to them?

I would never send my child to Harvard, are you crazy?
- a rich conservative

Ha. Why, because then your kid would realize what an selfish a-hole you are.

In conservative's minds, finding out the truth about the world and valuing other people equally to yourself = liberal indoctrination.

What’s with this plaintiff?

JOHN DOE, in their official capacity as Director of the Student and Exchange Visitor Program;

Would the administration not tell them who was in charge?

Also, go Jenner & Block, who certainly doesn’t get this assignment if they had caved to the Trump administration’s asinine demands instead of fighting back.

Why can’t all the foreign kids be virtual for 3.5 years. Take their pay, bestow the degree. What’s the big deal? The institution stands its ground. Compromise. Sure it’s not far but it’s not the end of the world. No one gets really injured. Those kids (a small cohort) are networked up the wazoo and won’t lose anything.

Why in the world would students do that when they can just go in-person in some other country?!

If they were open to online school, they wouldn't spend the money and effort to get accepted and show up in the US.

And who knows what else Trump will wreck over time? Much easier to go somewhere that welcomes them and they can trust -- pretty much any other country.

Between their graduate and undergrad programs. And they can enroll whomever they choose.

It's a global institution and they have over 30,000 students enrolled at a given time.

Every college and university in the country has foreign students (and the possible few who don't wish they did).

I guess this is a question of how we want to regulate global businesses then. The government can likely place restrictions on its funds. Of course they can.

Other private companies should watch this space too. Higher ed is one business sector …

It’s about business
1. We need visas for our workforce
2. We need visas for our client base for in-person services (like education)
3. Don’t mess with our business models for petty matters. petty matters (like basic crime or unruly protest) belong to the states.
4. Businesses are not here to back fill short-staffed government agency investigations. If you need evidence, go to other authorities. Business has enough to do and are right sized for one purpose

And? So? Do you know anything at all about what other countries do? Here’s a list of the top 10 universities in the UK with the highest number for foreign students. They are all public institutions. And they all charge much higher tuition to foreign students than to UK citizens.

1. **University College London (UCL)** - 24,145 international students
2. **University of Manchester** - 18,170 international students
3. **University of Edinburgh** - 18,050 international students
4. **University of Glasgow** - 17,390 international students
5. **King’s College London** - 17,155 international students
6. **University of the Arts London** - 14,395 international students
7. **University of Oxford** - 12,250 international students
8. **University of Warwick** - 11,800 international students
9. **Coventry University** - 11,535 international students
10. **University of Birmingham** - 10,655 international students

These stats are for the 2021/2022 academic year.
