Student accepted at 115 colleges

Anonymous
Girl applied to and was accepted at 115 colleges. I want to be impressed, but I can't help but think this was a phenomenal waste of time for her, her school's administration staff, and the admissions departments at the 100+ colleges that I'm sure she had no intention of attending. Even using the Common Apps requires some time and effort for each school. Not to mention, she may have taken a spot or a scholarship from another deserving student who did want to go to that school.

Meh. Good for her. Must be a slow news day for CNN.

She seems like a pretty remarkable kid.

It also seems like she got some poor quality advice, since sifting and winnowing down to a sensible number could have been done earlier.

I wish her well even though I don't think this is a good model to follow.

Ugh. Can colleges blacklist high schools that let kids do this?

Not bothered by it. She was probably seeking scholarship money and was wise to apply widely (maybe not that widely, but I'm not judging).

She says that many of her applications were through the Common Black application, which sends your application to as many as 53 institutions at once (more so than even the Common App). That could account for many of her acceptances.

All colleges over admit students knowing that many will choose anotehr school so I don't think she was taking seats from anyone. And the scholarships are still there to be awarded to others.

Ugh.

She said it herself - she only kept applying "to see how many I could get into".

AA people in particular should be furious. The universities will no longer give preference to the AA community if enough of them do this trophy hunting BS. If the colleges need to start worrying about yield protection from them then it will shake up the game.

Where are you getting evidence that most AA kids do this?? Heck, my family member just applied to only like 3 schools; I think many more are like him than this kid.

What a huge waste of everyone’s time. This is not impressive or something that should be commended.

+1 Between the Common App and the Common Black App, that's a lot of schools without much effort.

Question- if a lot students have been using the Black Common App, are HBCUs acceptance rates plummeting? I saw another story about a girl getting accepted to 50+ schools thru the app.

Total waste of time and did she pay for all of those applications?

Not every student who uses the Black Common App applies to all 53 HBCUs.

Why don't you look up the admit rates via their CDSs?

Is that really any of your business?

How about putting yourself in the shoes of this student and stop thinking about this from your own perspective and experiences? Here is a thoughtful blog post about why students have to do this.
