Ugh. Can colleges blacklist high schools that let kids do this?

Why? Look, 115 colleges is excessive, but also extremely rare. What would be the point in punishing the next class of applicants?

I'm always surprised at the number of students that apply to three or four schools. That's great if you really know where you want to go and plus a safety or two. Most students, particularly around here, ought to apply more broadly, because merit aid is much harder to predict than most think.

I chuckled when I read this:

"She said she has no idea which school she will attend yet, though she's considering Louisiana State University, Valparaiso University, University of North Texas, Fisk University, Randolph University, Brandeis University and Mississippi State University."

One of these things is not like the others. Brandeis? In contention along with a bunch of southern schools and HBCUs? Seemed an unusual choice (I attended an HBCU myself, but my other choice was not Brandeis, lol).

I can't imagine what their mailbox looked like each day. My DD got into 9 schools (all she applied to) and it's amazing how much info they all send every week. Some schools send brochures and postcards almost daily.

Let's ask jeff to put this as a sticky at the top of the forum.

I agree with other PPs that this is a waste of everyones time and totally selfish of the student. I wonder how many kids did not get in because she decided to apply to a school she had no intention of attending. Poor form.

That is not how admissions works.

I feel bad for kids that would have wanted to go to the other 114 colleges but didn't get in because this kid was playing games.

How doesn’t it?

My kid with a 4.0, several APs, 4s and 5s on AP exams, numerous mock trial awards and a 1500 SAT was waitlisted at Rhodes specifically because he didn’t visit. In their letter, they said that expressing an interest is critical to them and they would reconsider if he reached out or visited.

Yeah, but he could have gotten into 200 colleges if he'd applied to the right ones.

Ugh! Some of you are sooo mean! She did not hurt you or your child in anyway. She seems to have been poorly advised, but I doubt she had ill intent.

O.k., but what is the point of applying to 115 schools - especially if nearly all of them are all safeties and matches?

They can't give out infinite acceptances, so she took the place of someone else who got rejected. This is extremely obnoxious. The common APP should limit applications to some reasonable number.

Poorly advised, not a game or conspiracy to cause an admissions kerfuffle.
