Our school only had one child accepted into AAP

in the first round. An admin let it slip in a conversation. We are at a school that is mostly middle class with a 35ish % FARMS. No local level AAP option. About 10 kids went to the center last year from our school. Does this mean most of the kids from our school are usually admitted on appeal?

This definitely supports the theory that there is no consideration of space at the center when making AAP decisions at the committee level. Only one kid admitted has to be very unusual.

It sounds like your second grade teachers and AART are bad at putting packets together, or don't offer open ended assignments that would produce good work samples.

Possibly. Only one kid making it does seem pretty low, though. Our ES had 21 out of about 120 students currently in 2nd grade make it. The Principal stated she wants at least 18 kids in the AAP class (we have local level IV). If some peel off to go to the center school, she may need to Principal place a couple of kids.

NP-What's the FARMs rate at your school? 21/120 seems more in line with what I would expect.

I think it's about 25%.

Only one kid? Wow. That is shocking.

What's the center school? Is the center really crowded?

Our ES typically sends 5-10 kids out of 75. So your ES is "better" than ours. I don't know how many this year.

Different schools and different populations are different.

Does your ES have local level IV services?

I wonder how much this is a factor. My kids' Title I, 45% FARMS school has about 20% of the 2nd graders get accepted to AAP, with many of those not in-pool. The AART is fantastic at putting together packets and giving the right types of critical thinking assignments to use as work samples.

Which school?

I wonder if the administrator meant only 1 is attending the AAP Center?

How would they know? Parents don’t have to decide yet.

From what I am hearing, fewer kids, across the county, got in this year.
This year has lower numbers than before at our school. Less than 10 this year, when typically at least 20 get in round 1.

Hope they are staffing up for the appeals....
