Ukrainian victory over Russia is inevitable

The sad thing is that the same deal was available in Istanbul more than a year ago, and they would have kept so much more territory.

NATO wants endless wars. That’s all that matters.

Putin could end this tomorrow by withdrawing and returning stolen Ukrainian lands, assets and kidnapped children. You're deranged if you think NATO wouldn't accept that and instead want to continue the war.

Are you delusional? Putin will not end this war tomorrow, he is not going to withdraw after he gained so much advantage. We need to start with that point to negotiate. Sitting and saying Putin should withdraw is just promoting more Ukrainian deaths. He is not withdrawing. Ukraine does not have means, leadership or strategy to win this war. Democrats want to tank Ukraine from the moment Clinton forced them to give up their nuclear weapons to the moment when Obama gave Putin a green light to invade in 2014. And now, with Biden in power, Putin is unstoppable.

Whatever. Russian losses have been catastrophic. There is no win for them anywhere. They are certainly no threat to NATO in their depleted state. They've lost most of their armor, most of their artillery, much of their air force, a good deal of their Black Sea fleet, and more than 500,000 soldiers. Meanwhile, NATO became stronger with the addition of Sweden and Finland and a massive increase in investment in their arms industries.

Why Russia decided to launch such a breathtakingly stupid invasion remains mystifying.

They tried to take all of Ukraine and got wrecked by Ukrainian resistance and ferocious counterattacks. Since then the lines have been largely static. They've lost tens of thousands of soldiers taking small towns like Bakhmut and Avdiivka. And then didn't move further. Their recent northern offensive near Kharkiv has turned into a slaughter for Russians in Vovchansk. And with Ukraine resupplied with ATACMS and other long distance weapons, Crimea is very vulnerable to a siege the moment Ukrainians choose to take out the Kerch Straight Bridge.

Where is the win? Was losing tens of thousands of soldiers taking the Azovstal plant in Mariupol worth it? Russia is looking at several more years of brutal trench warfare just to take a few more miles in Donbas. And that's it. There is no chance Russia can take all of Ukraine and subjugate it. Meanwhile, they're condemned to decades of global isolation and a rapidly declining economy and standard of living. Not to mention the population doom loop they are now condemned to having lost a generation of men.

It's been terrible for Ukraine. But goodness, Putin's idiocy has certainly been a gift to the western world.

No, if Russia targeted the hospital deliberately it would have hit a supermarket instead. Their accuracy rate hasn't been terribly good.

You’re not wrong but an AIM 120 hit that hospital.

NATO would just provoke another conflict in a former Soviet state. Run a color revolution, fund some terrorists, etc.. The only reason NATO exists post 91 is to stir up trouble on Russia's doorstep.

OMG are you dumb.

The oversized boomer gif has convinced me. You'll probably need an even bigger .gif to convince your average Ivan NATO doesn't exist to get him. Probably an even bigger one to convince the Chinese NATO means no harm.

Wait, wasn’t victory defined by Ukraine as expelling Russia from every inch of territory? But Russia has conquered and held roughly 20% of Ukraine. How do you square that circle?

Russia has strengthened relations with China, India, etc as we shift to a multipolar world where the US is no longer the only actor calling the shots. They are far from some crippled global pariah, despite what the TV tells you.

Too bad Blackrock wants even more of that territory, so no chance of any peace talk.

What? Do you live in a fantasy? What global isolation? Russia has solid relationships with everyone except the US and Europe (who is putting on airs but quietly increasing their share of Russian gas imports). Wake up.

Looks like at least some faction wants to redefine "victory," but ISW and their neo-con ilk aren't having it:

Strengthened relations with China and India? You grossly overstate that. All Russia is to them is a discount gas station. And Russia is losing ground everywhere else. CSTO is losing members like CSTO, Russia has had many countries in its former USSR orbit fall out of its sphere of influence and has lost many historic allies in the last 10 years.

Operating a discount gas station takes courage, in the US at least...

Both China and India are taking advantage of Russia's weakness. There has been some technology transfer from Russia to China in exchange for some basic goods and services. And because of Russia's enormous losses in Ukraine, the entire frontier with China is effectively unguarded. In the 19th Century, when China was weak, Russia did annex a large area of what was then known as Manchuria. It was part of the Qing Empire and home to the Manchu. You can bet China wants that back and is watching Russia's deterioration with great interest.

India just wants cheap energy, which Russia is providing since it lost its most lucrative market - Europe. But this means that India is now the largest financier of Russian imperialism. Personally, I believe India should be sanctioned like North Korean and Iran. But Russia and India are hardly allies. India is taking advantage of Russia's weakness and isolation simply to secure some cheap gas.

And in the meantime, Russia continues to lose more than 1000 men a day. And everyone with more than two brain cells emigrated at the outset of war. Russia is a rapidly declining country that is becoming what it's always been - a backward country of illiterate and drunk peasants ruled by a grotesque czar.
