So the only legitimate heir to british Oxbridge in the US is HYP. |

I was talking to a british couple once. They were impressed by US state universities and was wondering why anyone would even consider private colleges and universities. I explained to them that private schools usually tout their English lineage, such as Yale residential college and Williams college’ tutoring. Americans are willing to fork over $80,000+ per year for the privilege of attending schools mimicking the UK system. To this, they rolled their eyes. Brits are the only people who laughs at HYP. If you don’t believe me, check out William Buckley’s talk at Oxford. During his introduction, the moderator mentioned one of his books, God and Man at Yale. You can hear oxford students snickering and laughing at this little country bumpkin from New Havens. A British Couple Story without the trolling fabrications of the previous poster. I was talking to a British couple once. They were impressed with Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Stanford, MIT and were wondering why anyone would even consider going anywhere else. I explained to them that Harvard and Yale have a proud English lineage, such as the Yale residential college system. Americans are willing to fork over $80,000+ per year for the privilege of attending these schools. To this, they beamed with pride. Brits have a tremendous respect for Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Stanford and MIT. Further, the Brits acknowledge and accept that Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Stanford, and MIT surpassed Oxford and Cambridge centuries ago. This settles it.
“Kayleigh McEnany says she didn't lie in the White House briefing room because she went to Oxford, Harvard...” https://www.yahoo.com/news/kayleigh-mcenany-says-she-didnt-225112768.html |
People come here pushing their agenda. It’s not useful for parents who might be here for useful information. The Elite of Elites, I'll buy as definitive. But then again, they were never in doubt (no backslaps for that work, chap!). As for the Elites, it's what you and another poster or two decided. What are your credentials to decide this? In fact, there are other schools ranked higher than some of the ones in your group, and they have higher student SAT ranges and averages too. Sorry, your Elite grouping is not definitive. |
| It’s unclear whether these imbeciles think they’re being clever or perhaps they lack any semblance of self awareness. Regardless, this thread is an embarrassing display of the education one receives at public universities……on the outside forever looking in. |
Ha! What incentive would a public university student or parent have to make this list? It's overwhelmingly privates. Perhaps, you received a bad education at a private. Hopefully, not from one of these "elite" schools. |
Which schools are you talking about? The "elite" schools feels pretty definitive and exhaustive to me. |
| I think the public Ivies are the bottom of “elite” at this point. Clearly not in the Harvard or Penn category, but given how intense the competition is these days and how well funded the flagship state universities are (not to mention really hard to get into!) I would include schools like Michigan, UVA, and Minnesota as “elite” if we’re going to have the discussion. |
Minnesota? Uh... I could agree with Michigan, UCLA, UVA, Berkeley being elite. Not sure about any other schools below them. |
| Berkeley, Michigan, and UCLA are the only three elite publics. |
UT Austin, UVA, and UNC are public Ivies. |
The only publics with across the board academic excellence at both the undergraduate and graduate levels are Berkeley, Michigan, and UCLA. |
The so-called “definitive” list survived this thread by sheer number of posts. The number of posts in this thread is a function - not of any general consensus - but of how much free time these proponents have. For all I know, they may be unemployed, or underemployed people, coming on here touting their “definitive” list. Busy people who may disagree with the “definitive” list don’t come here. They are too busy changing the world. |
