Regardless of language on websites, let's be honest with ourselves: Proximity does not ALWAYS equal quality.

As a parent of an 8th grader at Carson, let me give you a preview of what Skyview will be like. It's going to look similar to the direction that Carson has been moving in for the past year. You'll have about a third of the kids there who are really committed to their studies and want to excel academically and participate in extracurriculars. Wonderful! The remaining student body will be bringing knives to school and reselling things they stole from Walmart. (No, these are not hypothetical happenings: These are two very real occurrences that happen at least once a month now at Carson. And this kind of activity has only gotten worse in the past 2 years.)

So ... sure. If that's the environment you want your child in for HS, go for it. Yes, ALL schools have unique challenges and none are immune from problems. And I have no doubt that Skyview will hire great staff. But be careful what you wish for when your top priority is attending the "closer school."

You do realize that all of Crossfield except a small part, already goes to Carson now right? If Crossfield is fine with Carson, which they are, and Skyview will be the same as Carson as you claim, they should be fine with Skyview.

The irony of the rooted in Oakton people is their lobbying to be sent to a “poorer” performing middle school (Franklin) which, let’s be honest, is masked by the fact that their AAP kids will stay at Carson anyway.

In summary, they got their entire school moved to a lower performing middle school, knowing their own kids would stay at the higher performing middle school, all to justify their weird obsession with a high school an hour from their house by bus.

I hope the school board sees right through that.

I have a third grader, a THIRD GRADER, who is already telling me that all of his friends in AAP will still go to Carson even though we're being rezoned to Franklin.

they are wrong. franklin will have AAP by 2030. they are in the last group of middle schools to implement. if your child isn’t in the first group at franklin required to stay for AAP it will be the grade after

My POINT was that nobody is keeping their kids at Franklin for AAP as long as Carson is an option. This has been known from the start. The people who were proposing Franklin have kids in AAP and they KNEW they would be able to keep their kids at Carson. Remember, they proposed this BEFORE the middle school AAP conversation happened in the school board. And even then, the parents advocating for Oakton primarily have kids in 5th+ so the absolutely are going to send their kids to Carson for AAP.

If nobody is keeping their kids at Franklin for AAP if Carson is an option, why were there 90 Level 4 kids there the year my child was there? Why is my neighbor's kid in a Level 4 class there this year? Why has there been a cohort of Level 4 kids at Franklin every year?

Do you know every single parent of a Level 4 kid, so you are confident to say thet "they absolutely are going to send their kids to Carson for AAP"? 🙄

From what I saw in Navy, very few of aap level 4 kids chose Franklin in my daughter's grade. They have been encouraging kids to go Franklin for quite a few years. I don't understand why they allow kids to choose carson when Franklin already has level 4 aap. Isn't fcps short of budget every year? They always look to increase budget instead of trying to save money. I started voting for NO for any issuing of bonds on the ballots. Property tax has been going up like crazy and still not enough.

They haven’t been encouraging Franklin exactly. They provide tours of both as an option. Students have always had a choice and Carson is a really good middle school so most opt in. (I’m not saying Franklin is not, just that Carson carries a better academic reputation).

My DC chose Carson over Franklin since all the friends went there. Fcps should remove ES AAP center first, so the same ES kids go to same MS without being separate from their friends from a different ES.

Kids want to go with their friends. My kid opted in to Skyview as soon as it was available. No one else in his friend group seemed interested but he knew kids from other schools that were opting in and was fine with moving without a ton of his ES friends. Then a few of his friends started looking at it and opted in because they found the pathways interesting. By the 1 Mar date, all of his friend group had ended up opting-in, some because they were interested in the program, others because their friends were going to Skyview. Only 1 of the 15 or so kids we knew decided to return to the base HS and that was for sports.

You might be surprised to find that if more kids who are going to Carson because that is where their friends are going said "I am going to Franklin" how many kids might decide to go to Franklin because they knew kids who were staying. I suspect that there are more people who are on the fence about moving to Carson and just go with the flow.

Staying with friends is definitely one main thing. I know one girl in my daughter's grade chose Franklin. It probably had something to do with friends. Another reason is, both schools are equally close or close enough. There's no clear advantage to choose Franklin.

Agree, Westfield's problems are going to be a lack of high achieving students and not enough students, total. They need programming to attract more, full time high achieving students.

It was the May 5th work session, topic 3.02, slides 7-9. Not a ton of details because they're still bidding the work out to contractors.

The hyperbole in this post is sickening but perhaps inadvertently makes a strong case that Crossfield should be assigned to Skyview to provide these people with a reality check. I’m sure they think it’s fine to post such garbage because the Great Falls folks have been doing it for years, but enough is enough.

You don’t want these disgruntled pro-Oakton parents at Skyview. They will just kill the positive vibes at the new school. They should just stay at their over crowded and over competitive school far away school. If you paid attention, you would know that half of Crossfield families WANTED to move to Skyview and are really angry with the RIO community. Please don't lump us all in with these people. The consultants and Reid's staff have said that they heard equally from both sides, even if one side was more organized than the other.

Judging from the number of comments in the slides, there are way more than half of pro Oakton Crossfield families. Not Crossfield parent here.

And so could the Pro Skyview families. The Pro Skyview Crossfield families know that there is a group aggressively pushing to stay at Oakton. If they really want to go to Skyview AND stay as one group then they needed to speak out themselves. And they have, enough that the school is being split. The Consultants and Board are trying to make everyone happy, which means a split for Crossfield.

There was nothing stopping the Pro Skyview families from being more aggressive and outspoken, leaving extra comments on the scenarios, speaking out more, and being more engaged at meetings. The comments on this site lead one to believe that many Pro Skyview families were more concerned about the social impact of disagreeing with the RIO folks and less worried about moving to a different school.

It doesn’t help that one of the Pro Skyview parents is rude, dismissive, and mean on the board.

Exactly. If a parent says he wants skyview, but is not speaking out loud enough, he probably doesn't want it enough. Instead, a couple of pro skyview folks on this board keeps posting sour, mean, sarcastic comments as if that will give them moral high ground. It gets buried but I know I have posted that the Skyview Principal, Mr. Jagle's, told parents at one of the Skyview meetings that construction was going to start with the outbuildings, those two shell buildings, and that they were treating Skyview and Carson like they treat South Lakes and Hughes, there will be shared athletic spaces and fields. I read in the paper a few weeks ago that they had cleared the paperwork for the school to be used as a school, which surprised me since it was already a school but what do I know.

Most people are more worried about where the kids are going to be attending then what the building will look like. The construction questions have been regularly asked at the meetings for the families who opted in. They are starting with the out buildings, which will be used as classroom space.

Also, for all the new pathways Skyview is supposedly introducing - has anyone seen any information as to how teachers will be trained/qualified for these roles? An aerospace pathway is pretty unique and requires highly specific training, outside of general staff training offered across FCPS.

I don't know if they published the slides but they have the classes outlined for the different paths and all of the classes have been approved by the Board, they did that earlier this year. They have showed the pathways to the parents and kids who opted in to Skyview. Part of the reason for doing so was to help the 10th graders make choices that would help them get onto the pathways as 11th graders. The 9th graders have a bit more time but the choices might influence what electives they took this year.

They might close in atrium/amphitheater type spaces in the building to yield more floor space for classrooms.

The main building also has an additional gym they don’t need which could make way for classrooms also, or to be used as the Library or Cafeteria, as there is no proper FCPS style library or cafeteria in the current state of the main building.

But we don’t know.

The shell buildings being classrooms is great and all, but it’s great to have students under 1 roof rather than 3 roofs.

My high school was an open campus in California, it wasn't a big deal. The school is still an open campus. The distance between the shell buildings and the main school is not that different then the distance between Carson and the furthest trailers. HS can handle the walk and all of the school that the kids are coming from or would be going to have trailers and out buildings the kids use.
