Miranda’s platform was obsolete the minute it was clear five days per week would happen in the fall. Mary’s was never about opening schools or not. Look at her webpage from day 1 - she was and is focused on all the other issues facing APS and our students. She addressed the school closing/opening issue eventually, but wasn’t campaigning on it because it’s moot by the time Jan 1 2022 rolls around. By contrast, Miranda had nothing else in her quiver when this all started. She has no track record of engaging in APS or APS issues, and pulled her child from the system went she wasn’t happy. This is not a candidate invested in the long term of APS. Despite ALL CAPS screaming by some on AEM, the caucus is not a referendum on opening schools.

Yeah, well, Diaz-Torres had no experience, either. And no, I don't count 4 years of Teach for America - or whatever it's called - in Nevada as experience for being on the Arlington SB. Anybody could put together the agenda Mary has laid out - it's merely all the key talking points and phrases with no specific proposals or solutions. I am an undecided voter between Mary and Miranda. But at this point, if Audrey Clement were running for SB, I'd vote for her without hesitation.

I follow both Turner and Kadera's campaign on Facebook, and was surprised to see an SR admin screenshot (I think you guys call her lawyer lady) in a pre-debate Kadera Zoom party. I thought Kadera was distancing herself from these parent advocacy groups? Yikes.

Please get some help or at least a life

I stopped caring about the APE vs SR wars, but really? Wow.

I only care because Kadera distanced herself from these groups, only to have a main admin show up to her pre-watching party. Not a good look for either of them.

I even think Kadera is a better candidate. But things like this can't happen in politics. It looks terrible. Kadera said what she said. She needs to wipe her hands clean, and not be around anyone easily identified from these groups.

Someone has clearly been twisting his arm behind the scenes. There’s no way his did this under his own accord.

I was concerned with the tone of his email - I know tone can be tough to read in emails, but he seems aggressive about removing the distancing (perhaps in an effort to convince more kids to switch to virtual?). Ultimately it should be up to the parents to decide whether we are OK or not OK w/sending our kids to school w/out distancing. Hopefully he sticks with this message.

OMG. you people won't LET him do anything right. Be forthcoming! He's too harsh with his forthcomingness! Give the man one tiny little break!

I love that Duran provides weekly updates to staff and parents. I would like to be back 4 days a week but am happy with him overall. I think he is thoughtful. I think letting more kids select hybrid was the right call. It was mentioned during the last meeting that while FCPS was allowing some people to go in 4 days a week they weren’t allowing virtual kids to opt in.

do you have kids experiencing DL and APS for the past 13+Months?

Anonymous wrote:theory: the people on this board who are ranting about the school board and APS and referring to it's members as "lazy" have never been in charge of a similar institution which is as large as a ship and requires lead time to do basic things like stop and turn around.

If they ever volunteered for a APS committee and observed the inner workings of the school board, they would have a much better understanding of institutional speedbumps etc and would take back this nonsense in a minute. But no, these sweet summer children who haven't done anything besides volunteer at their own school must know better. *blech*

(that said, I don't like Bridget Loft either. But Duran is fine.)

OR, people on this board work for the USG and are routinely pressed to find solutions to complex problems--national security? border crisis? COVID mitigation and vaccine rollout? And, because of their experiences working on extremely complex and challenging issues they expect that APS also figure it out and get it done....

Um, this is your actual response. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

The Federal government is slow as molasses and moves at glacial pace. Truly glacial. And often screws things up. LOOK AT YOUR EXAMPLES. You're holding up covid and the border as examples of the Feds sorting out a complex situation? Make a different argument.

And by the way, I worked in the Feds for 10 years. So not clueless about how it functions.

Perfect response! (DCUM unicorn)

Congress is at fault for the mess that immigration is. USG employees are beholden to respond and adapt and work in the middle of that mess. If you think that managing thousands of kids in federal care and custody in the midst of COVID--releasing them to safe and appropriate adults, having bilingual staff, screening them for physical and mental health issues and trauma and trafficking and gang affiliations or concerns, and providing them with meals and education is LESS complex than what APS is doing then you might as well run for office, because you clearly have ALL of the solutions.

DP - or that people are over-characterizing his zealousness. He is a persistent voice in support of Miranda and he takes every opportunity to promote her/her name .... as a good campaign manager should. But IMO, he is not rude or overbearing. Certainly not like others on AEM are. He's just being harshly criticized because the AEM "in" crowd fiercely opposes Miranda. I am not a Miranda supporter. At this point, I'd probably have to vote for Mary even though I am completely un-enthusiastic about her because she is absolutely the status-quo candidate who is falling lock in-step with the rest leading us further down the "equity lens" and "white privilege" policy-making that I sense is beginning to go off the rails. Hmm.

I'm not in Arlington, but I'm curious as to what the issue is there that caused 53 pages on a school board meeting in a week?

I just went back to check and his latest tantrum on the "Important Update on the Family Selection Process" thread was deleted!

Wonder if MT told him to chill TF out.

What are you talking about? If you care about alignment with groups you should care that Miranda Turner's campaign IS APE. Turner is a leader of APE. Turner's campaign treasurer is a leader of APE. Turner's campaign manager is active in APE. All of her campaign volunteers are from APE.

There's no daylight between Miranda and APE.

Of course it's pretty obvious YOU are APE too. Anyone who would bother to post on DCUM on Miranda's behalf is clearly APE. You people are just like Trump. Points for your umm "enthusiasm."

I see TT has joined us!

He got told to tone it down on AEM so he just moved on over to DCUM.

The Miranda campaign has nothing of substance to say. All they do is attack. Not what I want.

Welcome to Arlington. Where people can argue incessantly about anything.

But I’m not APE. My children are virtual right now. I don’t like either candidate tbh. Turner focuses too much on BTS, which will be moot in Jan. But Kadera makes statements but upon further evidence, really doesn’t mean it.

Try again.
