It does if ATS is only used by south Arlington |

To the PP asking about to the county owned land along 4 mile run, yes you are correct. Plan for thousands of affordable density there. That is one of the reasons developers were quietly supporting the mi Voz Cuenta group, bc without the new plan the way it is writtem they would lack a mandate. I heard a developer at the board meeting approving the housing plan say whew, glad we made to through that. There is also a plan for 1k units in columbia hills. First 250 family units recently approved by then board.
Katie cristol supports all of this by the way. No ways of stop any of it unless you want to be publicly labeled a racists. Your voice as a homeowner in west south arlington does NOT count. |
Is this the area at Columbia pike and four Mile run? Across from the opening of the WO&D? I hope CARD stays at this. They were able to make some ( albeit small) change and impact to the master plan, and they did that in a short amount of time. |

Area between the dog park, long branch, VHC and current development.
CARD is great, but many more people need to get involved. They are very careful about what they say, always taking the positive high road. That is fine, but they don't take chances and they were still attacked and labeled racists by the board and triggered mi coz Cuenta. Numbers matter and not enough showed up to vote against Cristol and for McMenamin, so again there is a mandate for the status quo. CARD had a hundred or so signatures for their key letters and other side had hundreds more. Same thing witht the board vote. Unless A LOT more people start seriously complaining on a consistent basis, showing up to board meetings, getting petitions signed and put themselves out there, the affordable housing lobby will get their way. The only independent on the board is too chicken to rock the boat and be seen for the republican that he is. I cannot believe they he supported the housing plan with all his amendments thsg were shot down, but he voted for it anyways, giving VOICE the mandate of a unanimous vote on the plan. And in case anyone is watching, the board intends to reopen the commercial mixed use form based code for the pike to mandate affordable housing. In my opinion, the whole pike plan and form based code needs to be blown up as a total failure. |
CARD would be able to have more teeth if they had the numbers. If you aren't involved get involved Then talk to others. Or move to Fairfax.... |
All those parents would freak out if their snowflakes were bused to S Arl. |
| What nova needs is another TJ. Kind of like the Bronx Science to Stuyvesant. There are so many nerds here that it could work. |
Don't be stupid. This thread has moved past that. |
I live in South Arlington. My kids go to ATS. ATS has higher FARM rates than some other N. Arl schools. The fact that ATS is the only county wide choice school means it is increasingly becoming the only option for South Arlington families. Claremont and others are closing their enrollment due to overcrowding. It wouldn't matter to a lot of parents where ATS is located, there is a good mix of north and south kids who go there now. I think the bigger problem is that it's the only county wide choice school. Arlington needs more seats in choice schools that are open for South Arlington to lottery in to. |
That was my point from earlier. If we can't get them to stop overloading out schools with poverty, we need to fight for choice schools to send our kids to. |
What do we define as West South Arlington? I know where Middle Arlington is, but this is new. |

To the PP who mentioned the lawsuit at ATS, it was brought by one (or more) parents who objected to a lottery that was weighted to give preference to minority students. Information here:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/local/daily/jan99/race25.htm To make sure that at least some minority and lower SES students are included in admission, ATS gives automatic admission to the students enrolled in the VPI program located at ATS. I think it's 16 students or so. |
| How about putting ALL the choice schools (except Key) in South Arlington? |
VPI is based on economic status, not minority. It just happens that most of the VPI students are from minority backgrounds. |
