NW/SV/Clarksburg redistricting

Both initial sessions for informing the public on the proposed maps have been cancelled due to weather.

Are the maps out, or do we wait until Jan 23/24? Will they hopefully extend public comment time longer, too?

It's only 6 days away.

OP, there are no proposed maps. This is the meeting about the BEGINNING of the boundary study.

You can read about the boundary study process here: http://gis.mcpsmd.org/boundarystudypdfs/FAA.pdf and here: http://gis.mcpsmd.org/boundarystudypdfs/FAA_RA.pdf

You can read about this particular boundary study here: https://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/departments/planning/UpcountyHSBoundaryStudy.aspx

January 14th and 17th CANCELED due to weather
January 23rd- Scheduled as planned Clarksburg High School Auditorium 6:30 p.m.
January 24th-Rescheduled meeting at Seneca Valley High School Auditorium 6:30 p.m.

Flyer here:http://gis.mcpsmd.org/boundarystudypdfs/SVHS_FlyerPIM1English.pdf

Scope of boundary study here: http://gis.mcpsmd.org/boundarystudypdfs/SVHS_BOEAdoptedBoundaryStudy.pdf

And all of the documents for the boundary study will be posted on line.

Also, nobody is getting redistricted. The boundary study is about high school reassignments for Clarksburg, Northwest, and Seneca Valley high schools, within the same school district (MCPS).

And it's also about middle school assignments within those three clusters.

No, it's not. The middle schools are in the boundary study because of feeding to the high schools (including with split articulation). What may change is: which middle schools go to which high schools.

If the boundary study were about which elementary schools go to which middle schools, then the elementary schools would also be in the study, and they're not.

The theme song for the meeting should be "Take the diversity bus to Clarksburg and I'll meet you at the station..."

There is no "diversity bus".

The RideOn #75 goes to Clarksburg HS but only at arrival and dismissal.

Clarksburg HS is already very diverse. If you have a problem with that, Clarksburg is not the place for you.

Umm. Clarksburg is very diverse. It is less about that and more about what kind of diversity you want in Clarksburg and what kind you do not. Gangs and thugs from Germantown and MS 13 from Montgomery Village: NO! Several groups of immigrant peoples who want to better their lives for themselves and their families while having a focused mindset on going to a great college and scholastic achievement: YES!!

Well, since the net flow of students will be from overcrowded Clarksburg and Northwest, the real question is which areas will be funneled into Seneca Valley, currently a much weaker school. As a parent in one of the areas added last minute into the study, I of course worry that it is our area that will get axed into SV.

Education-wise I am indifferent because either the kid will get into Poolesville or we'll move to another area before kid hits HS. It is also possible that SV will get enriching science and IB programs, making it an acceptable choice for strong students. Financially, it will be better for resale if our home stays with the initial assignment. Clearly everyone has the same problem, and someone is going to lose big $$$, especially in the short term while SV tries to change its reputation.

MCPS does not, and should not, use property values (or, more accurately, people's perceived effects on their property values) as a factory in boundary decisions.

Yea, whatever. Hopefully there is an endangered turtle whose annual migration route crosses the exact bus route from my house to SV, or perhaps a BOE member happens to live in the neighborhood or something.

It sounds like half of Seneca Valley will eventually be from areas that were zoned for NW and Clarksburg HS. In my opinion this will totally change SV for the better. It may eventually be on par with the other two schools. So I'm not particularly worried at this point.

You may well be right, eapecially if BOE does put some kind of science magnet in SV.

I am on the southern end of NW's district, so I was rather hoping to stay in NW and eventually be cut off into the new Crown, but time will tell. It is possible that being moved to SV will eventually be ok. Short-term I expect 50k off all housing prices.
