| Anyone know if Mundo Verde will have an open house at their new location? I’m also curious as to how many families will transfer from P street to 8th st location. It’s a much better location and current families get preference. |
|
My understanding is that the open houses will be at the P Street location, but there will be a chance to tour the new campus after the lottery. Anyone else know about that?
What do you mean, though, that the new location is better? You prefer the campus, or just that it's a more convenient location for you? I haven't seen the new campus myself. |
| The new location is more convenient, the area around is nicer and more outdoor space. |
But will the kids at the new campus learn what to do when they see a used needle? That is the question... |
Holy eye-roll. Why bother with DC public school threads if you wouldn't cross the park or only come to the city for work? |
| Current family here. The new location does not work for us, commute-wise. We'll be staying at P street. There are trade-offs with almost every school in DC when it comes to location. There are shootings near our in-bound elementary which we used to walk to. We're happy with the P street location, exaggerated needle sightings and all. |
You obviously must be referring to the P st location. New location is on a very isolated, quiet, one-way, suburban block. My kid went to Scrilli next door and you’d think you’re not in the city at that location. Very beautiful area. |
| once they are done building the new location isn't going to have much of there own out door space at all! Last I heard it wasn't even going to have a playground and they were saying they would walk the kids up the rec to play. which is actually way too far for young kids and 20-30 minutes they get outside. HOPEFULLY they will come up with a better option and or creative outdoor play space on sight. The area isn't going to stay as quite and suburban as it is now with all the planned development on the Catholic hospitals property. It isn't all that walkable from the metro but does offer a bus line a few blocks away. The location is definitely catering to the neighbors and those with private transportation though not that different than any of the other ward 5 charters. |
Eh, Ive lived 3 blocks from that location for 10 years, we go to the playground in question ALL the time, and I don't find this eye rolly, but legit. My toddler has picked up crack pipes, we are sometimes accosted by people on K2, people are living on the basketball court. It's actually beyond normal "city living" |
I'll add that i LOVE it when the MV kids are there, there is safety in numbers and I think having that mass of kids there protects everyone. |
They are getting rid of the playground that already exists at the location because??? |
Because they need to build an addition to house all the students when they reach their full size (same size as P St). They can't make the finances work otherwise. I don't think the addition is being built immediately but could be wrong. check the archives - lots of discussion about this when the proposal to expand was before the PCSB. |
+1. I work a block from MV and it is far outside the norm for city living. I see people OD'ing multiple times a week. Generalizing and minimizing does a disservice to the ongoing drug crisis happening there. |
Is this a thing, that current MV families get transfer preference to the new campus? I haven't heard of that. I would guess that many of the younger kids who would be eligible for the new school have older siblings who would not be able to transfer, so there probably will not be a lot of movement in that direction. |
Yup unless something changed (and I don't think it did) they are getting rid of the playground at new location and will walk the kids to Brookland rec center, which (I think) is a farther walk than the playgrounds P street uses. |
