Vegetarian Diet for weight loss

Please recommend a Vegetarian Diet for weight loss, I am 46 years old with knee issues.

It's about calories in, vs. calories out. A vegetarian diet that will help you lose weight includes lots of vegetables and fruit, salads without lots of dressing, and beans.

A vegetarian diet that will NOT help you lose weight, is eating a large cheese pizza every day.

Make lots of hearty vegetable soups and stews and veggie chili. Eat lots of whole fruit.

This! I was a vegetarian for 5 years, oddly enough I lost weight without even trying once i started eating meat again. I ate a lot of carbs and cheese as a vegetarian.

Yep. You're not going to lose weight eating only pizza any more than you would eating only chicken strips or bacon burgers.

Whether vegetarian, vegan, or omnivore, you just need to make good choices.

Whole grains, vegetables, and fruit. Greek yogurt. Cottage cheese. Eggs. High quality plant protein.

If it helps, cheese technically isn’t vegetarian. It requires rennet, which is from the stomach of a killed calf. So don’t eat cheese.

Stick with real food and stay away from those frozen vegetarian Frankenfoods.

I eat tons of those. Love 'em, and I'm a body builder with very low body fat and pretty high muscle mass. YMMV.

Most processed cheeses are in fact vegetarian but the narrower point that you need to check is valid and in fact most fancy cheeses alas are not vegetarian.

I presume by frankenfoods the PP is referring to the substitute meat products. Which really aren't any worse for you than the processed meat products they replace - I guarantee you vegetarian chicken nuggets and veggie dogs have less harmful and processed food bits than what they replace.

The problem though (and I really like these foods myself) is they usually tend to be more carbohydrates than proteins and the part of the vegetarian diet you need to do more planning to replace is proteins so if you are eating those foods as protein substitutes they aren't great as 1:1 replacements.

Its not hard to get adequate protein as a vegetarian but fake meat products alone really won't get you there and can be fattening.

I’m a vegetarian for over twenty five years. Just wanted to share that I had chocolate pie for lunch today. It was delicious.

I've been vegetarian all my life. I am currently overweight, and have struggled with my weight for 20 years.

Being vegetarian does not equal weight loss.

Weight loss is about consuming less calories then you burn. Eat healthy foods (meat or veg) in moderation.

I met someone recently who said she was vegetarian, but she doesn’t like most vegetables and doesn’t eat much fruit. GTGO. What do you eat then? Pasta? Yeah, ok.

I don't know. Any diet without vegetables and fruit is a bad diet. And there are certainly tons of carnivores who don't eat any vegetables or any fruit. They're not better off. This has nothing to do with being vegetarian it's not like an apple is replacement for steak anyway

I went vegan for weight loss and I can confirm that works. It is really hard to take in a lot of vegan calories unless you start chugging olive oil.

I was vegan for years and felt and looked great. Went to just vegetarian for five, and not so great. In August, went back to vegan and unexpectedly lost 9 pounds. Bonus: my reflux went away. I think the dairy was causing it; cheese does not agree with me, unfortunately.

the nice thing about being vegan is it forces you to really focus on high-quality vegetables and grains and the overall nutrition.

Thia is a good knowledge base you can take back with you if you start eating meat and other animal products again.

Part of the reason I eat these foods is convenient protein, but I read labels. Boca vegan burgers are 13g protein and 70 calories, so protein per calorie ratio similar to whey protein powder.
