The only thing that disgusts me is how one side got away with it while one had to suffer all the consequences.

Even assuming there was some blame on the SUV driver (I don't agree with this, but let's just go with it), he played his cards right - cooperated with prosecution and got immunity. Shahid had a chance to plea, but decided to take this to trial. He got exactly what he deserved for his stupidity 2 years ago and after the accident.

I think he already pay the price, the parents yelled at him a lot for it.

Being at fault aside, likely whole family is living an emotional, financial and social nightmare. One day your 18 year old is graduating and going to college and next day he is in a lethal accident and being charged for manslaughter.

He was not “in” a lethal accident. He CAUSED a lethal accident. And now he’s UPSET that he’s in trouble. He’s sorry he’s in trouble. But there’s been nothing to indicate that he’s sorry THAT HE KILLED 2 PEOPLE.

+1 Some of these posters are acting as if 2 people broke a leg or got some bruises and that the driver's life shouldn't be impacted. His victims died! They don't have a life any more!

Nobody is denying that but he is also not the cold blooded killer others are painting him to be. He should face legal consequences but people trying to get him harshest possible punishment and prison rape are also out for blood of a stupid teen who was too excited to take his new car out to high school. I'm all for making him an example but not for sacrificing him for sins of all mankind.

Agreed. But really it was his own stupidity there too . A plea would have given him a much shorter sentence. Now he's looking at a longer one. The judge will be fair but they typically give much more than a plea deal.

I doubt a high school kid was making these decisions himself.

He is attending Virginia Tech. He is not a high school kid

He was a high school kid at the time of the crime.

What they meant to say is he was a high school kid when that incident happened.

I am not in anyone side so I just don't understand of doing this again. I think it will be very painful and we just to forgive and move on and God Bless everyone. GOD, Aliah, Dios , Who you pray FOR IF you pray. is fine.
just forgive and put away the Civil trial. There no winners today, we are all hurt. and we can't relive this

The point of the civil trial is for the victims or in this case the victims' families. The criminal trial was for Shahid. The civil trial will be for the victims.

+1 and to pay the bills for the poor girl who is working still to pay off her medical bills along with the mother who had to take a second job. Meanwhile, your kid went off to college still is partying as if nothing happened.

It's very likely there were signs of entitlement prior to this killing. The parents clearly indulged him. And he clearly had no concerns for anyone other than himself and his drug-using friends.

Why are you randomly throwing allegations of drug use on his friends?

DP and I only know about this case from reading the thread and the links in it but I definitely read that at least one passenger was smoking pot. I’m also the PP who remembered that he was at VT and that turned out to be correct.

His parents probably thought they could buy his way out of this. It’s clear they have exceptionally poor judgment.

They bought him this future with the BMW and how he was raised so entitled. Thought the rules didn’t apply to him. Instead of being humble waiting for trial, he went off to VT and partied like nothing had changed.

21:50. Then he should have taken the plea deal.

Weed is now legal in Virginia, and second its 2024, no one cares if someone is smoking pot we are in the 1900s anymore.

Not sure why people think he's been in Blacksburg for the last 2 years. I don't think he's even an online student at Tech. He has continued living and working in Fairfax Co since the crash. Why make up things?

What I don't get is why people on this thread are asking questions like what is the importance of a civil case and why do a plea deal and how important is a jury and what speed limit is safe (duh the one posted). If these posters are the family then this attorney needs to straighten them out better. They are clueless.

Has he paid any money to the victim that survived for her injuries?

Not likely. His paycheck has been going to his parents for the lawyer and BMW.

Also it was a bmw 530i with a 4 cylinder just like any car on the street nowadays

Yeah I suspect I’m not the only BMW driver in this thread, and a 530 is not “like any car on the street nowadays.” But what do I know, I’m just the parent from way back in this thread who kept the keys away from her 18-year-old until she actually had a license and not just a learner’s permit. And those keys were to a five-year-old Honda, not a 530.
