I am not in anyone side so I just don't understand of doing this again. I think it will be very painful and we just to forgive and move on and God Bless everyone. GOD, Aliah, Dios , Who you pray FOR IF you pray. is fine.
just forgive and put away the Civil trial. There no winners today, we are all hurt. and we can't relive this

Yes, there were no winners. There was JUSTICE. And a killer is now going to jail. Punishment is not just from jail. It can also be financial. And that will be next.

The only thing that disgusts me is how one side got away with it while one had to suffer all the consequences.

Even assuming there was some blame on the SUV driver (I don't agree with this, but let's just go with it), he played his cards right - cooperated with prosecution and got immunity. Shahid had a chance to plea, but decided to take this to trial. He got exactly what he deserved for his stupidity 2 years ago and after the accident.

I think he already pay the price, the parents yelled at him a lot for it.

Being at fault aside, likely whole family is living a emotional, financial and social nightmare. One day your 18 year old is graduating and going to college and next day he is in a lethal accident and being charged for manslaughter.

It's very likely there were signs of entitlement prior to this killing. The parents clearly indulged him. And he clearly had no concerns for anyone other than himself and his drug-using friends.

Why are you randomly throwing allegations of drug use on his friends?

Different poster. Though it was in the report but either way they ran off and had to be found and all Usman said was my dad is going to kill me or something Complete narcissists.

The point of the civil trial is for the victims or in this case the victims' families. The criminal trial was for Shahid. The civil trial will be for the victims.

He was not “in” a lethal accident. He CAUSED a lethal accident. And now he’s UPSET that he’s in trouble. He’s sorry he’s in trouble. But there’s been nothing to indicate that he’s sorry THAT HE KILLED 2 PEOPLE.

+1 Some of these posters are acting as if 2 people broke a leg or got some bruises and that the driver's life shouldn't be impacted. His victims died! They don't have a life any more!

Nobody is denying that but he is also not the cold blooded killer others are painting him to be. He should face legal consequences but people trying to get him harshest possible punishment and prison rape are also out for blood of a stupid teen who was too excited to take his new car out to high school. I'm all for making him an example but not for sacrificing him for sins of all mankind.

Agreed. But really it was his own stupidity there too . A plea would have given him a much shorter sentence. Now he's looking at a longer one. The judge will be fair but they typically give much more than a plea deal.

It's possible parents didn't know he is taking the car out to give his friends a ride? He was 18 and a student driver in first accident, probably didn't have idea of the gravity of the crash.

I doubt a high school kid was making these decisions himself.

That is exactly why he won't say anything at sentencing admitting anything. His atty will be appealing and Shahid will continue the charade that he's the victim here. If he actually admits guilt, it will mess up his appeal. So he won't.

That's not how this works. It is not disputed that he was driving the vehicle. This isn't a case where he's pleading mistaken identity. His appeal will have to attack the reasoning for the conviction - i.e. - that the jury got it wrong. This is very difficult to do and IMO impossible in this case. The American justice system places anormous weight on the jury's decision. It is hard to undo.

His parents probably thought they could buy his way out of this. It’s clear they have exceptionally poor judgment.

Probably not, but you can be pretty certain his attorney insisted on one on one conversations with him and laid it all out. To not do so would be ethically wrong.

Different poster. Having known him before and after the crash, yes of course there's entitlement. He's not evil. Immature and entitled? Absolutely. I like the guy on a personal level but 81 in a 35 is about as careless and reckless you can get. He deserves time behind bars.

Sorry, Mr. & Mrs. Shahid. You thought you dished out enough money for a lawyer. The consequences of spoiling your dearest son is about to get much more expensive.
