DD wont be playing VB after all

DD had verbally committed to a D3 volleyball program and received an early read of her application that she would be admitted. She has a 4.4 and has taken 8 APs (but Honors Calc, as math is her weakness) and met/exceeded the general rqts for admission. She is a 2 sport athlete, works summers and volunteers with disabled children (and I think has found her calling) but only took the SAT once, getting the same score as her PSAT, 1420. In real life, those would be great credentials but for this D3 school, her SAT was just in range for acceptance. Well the coaching staff changed so she no longer has a roster spot and so she is rethinking her preferred college experience. She doesnt want to pursue the collegiate volleyball plan any longer and does seem excited about attending a larger D1 school and not playing sports. As of today, she wants to apply regular decision to her dream school, Notre Dame and retire her knee pads. Looking at Naviance and the general SAT expectations for Notre Dame, this seems to be a long shot. She did not take any subject tests which is another limitation. She missed the early action deadlines so will also apply regular decision to Boston College but perhaps will be in the range for Villanova. We are starting the college seach all over again on Nov 10th! Your advice would be awesome!!

Does DD go to Catholic school? Is she Catholic and does she have a way of showing that to Notee Dame? Volunteer work, CCD teacher, etc!
If not then her chances are slim.

Would she not want to play volleyball at Notre Dame?

Make sure she adds a few solid safeties. If she is only looking at catholic universities, have her look at University of Scranton.

Thanks for the feedback! She attends a girls CTholic school but knows she doesn’t have the skills/size to play VB at ND.

How about Fordham? Similar vibe to BC but not as hard to get into.

I have a friend who was recruited to University of Maryland to play water-polo. The winter of her HS senior year Maryland canceled the water polo program and she was in a similar situation. She worked her coaches to find a program that was a good fit and she had a great experience at a school that she never considered..

A few thoughts:
Where is the coach who recruited her going? Is it worth looking at that school? I assume she had some connection there and coach connection matters when playing at the next level.

For Notre Dame can she get a tutor to go all in and increase SAT scores? Having someone look at where she was weak and focus on 3 areas can make a big difference given where she is with her scores.

An aside- Everyone I know who went to Villanova had an incredible experience and loves it. They will go on and on about what a great choice it was for them. My Boston College friends are not the same.

Notre Dame loves good students from girls Catholic schools. Every year 8-12 Stone Ridge and Visitation girls get into Notre Dame. Similar numbers to Georgetown. If she is very enthusiastic about Notre Dame she has a good shot. Have her apply early.

That’s actually a fine SAT score. Sure, she could try for more but that’s nothing to worry about.

OP encourage her to visit Notre Dame and to put a lot of effort into the App.

They take kids with that SAT score - regularly admit kids with slightly lower even.
Bigger deal is her wanting to be in a catholic environment, catholic school, visiting the school and the fact that she has taken rigorous courses.
She has a good shot. Too bad the early deadline has passed but aren’t there two early deadlines? No Early Action?

Every kid we know who has gone to Fordham has loved it. It tends to fly under the radar here in the DMV but it is a great school.

BC doesn’t give preference for EA so it’s not a disadvantage to miss the deadline. My non-catholic kid got in with only marginally higher stats so seems like BC isn’t out of the question.

I would definitely recommend applying to Villanova as a back up to Notre Dame.

That’s because it’s in the Bronx. Even my son’s friends who live in the Bronx insist that they don’t hang out in the Bronx when he visits because they don’t feel safe there.

Your kid needs safeties, preferably one with a December 1 early action deadline. Boston College, Notre Dame, and possibly even Villanova are not safeties. Both my kids going through the process recently were asked by their college counselor to identify four schools that they liked and were sure to be accepted. After that, consider the reaches. Gonzaga, Xavier, Pitt, Fordham, and an appropriate in-state school might all work as probable admits.
