Oberlin or NYU

Which is harder to get into?

How likely would NYU be for my DS - full pay, solid B, 1250, early decision?

DS is planning to apply to Oberlin if he gets rejected from NYU.

They're comparably difficult to get into and I would say it is unlikely your DS will be admitted with those stats unless he's an URM. Those are also two very different schools in almost every way.

OP said "full pay", which lowers the stats for admission.

+1

Also, they are such vastly different schools that I don't understand why he is interested in both of them.

Even with full pay, those scores will be tough for NYU or Oberlin

Disagree. NYU is a target. Oberlin is a slight reach but will still get accepted.

He is below the middle 50% on test scores and well below on GPA and yet you think NYU is a match. The only thing he has going for him is that he's male.

OP the grades are not good enough for NYU, bottom line.

Does your kid have exceptional musical talents? I mean exceptional, not just tooting in the school band for 3 years. I mean like ABRSM grade 8 clarinet or cello that kind of thing.

Because Oberlin has the dual program where you can get a degree from the music conservatory at the same time as an academic degree.

If your child does have this, then they are far more likely to be admitted with those grades.

I know I'm generalizing here, and may just plain be partly wrong.

My feeling is that NYU still has a reputation for being a school for unserious trust fund babies. But, if it's so hard to get into, maybe getting good grades there is pretty hard.

If a student might have to work hard to get good grades at an expensive school with an iffy academic reputation, maybe the student would be better off at a different school.

Example: If what your son likes about NYU is the idea of going to a private school in the middle of New York, how about the New School? It looks as if the average SAT score for the New School is about 1200.

If your son is more business-oriented, PACE University has an average SAT score of about 1100, and it has a campus right by City Hall in New York.

The OP’s son will not get into either school with those stats. The OP is dreaming.

Strange post.

DS accepted to both. No SAT - 30 ACT with 3.6 UW GPA.

On the percentile scale, 3.6 GPA is equal to 91%. The 3.6 GPA is equivalent to the letter “A” and earned from a possible 4.0.
The 3.0 is equivalent to the solid letter "B". On the percentile scale, 3.0 GPA is equal to 85%
Big difference between 3.6 UW GPA and "solid B."
