| My DD was accepted to NYU Tisch regular decision with 33 ACT and 3.6 GPA. Generous financial aid, mostly grants, but also work study. I know that's is not typical, but it happened. Never imagined it would be affordable. She loves her courses/program of study. Loves being in NY. Tougher to find social niches due to size of school. |
I would assume her portfolio was quite good? |
Anecdotally, USC is known for reducing the amount of grants over the years because students have less option toward the end of their college years. It's hard to believe NYU might not be engaged in the similar practice. |
| NYU is a hot school right now. Stats are low but ED and full pay will help. I say go for it! |
+ 1. Not sure about the "Oberline could not fill its class" part but agree on the "This area has a ton of full pay kids with A averages". Most middle class Asians with dual income, programmer-type parents are willing to pay full price if necessary to send their kids to top schools. Most of those kids have an A/A- average. So it's not just the rich that have money to pay for school. |
I guess... https://www.insidehighered.com/news/2017/12/12/oberlin-faces-budget-crunch-due-missed-enrollment-targets |
Check the date genius. That was class of 2021. |
I did not want not be a jerk but its even lower for the class of 2022 is actually smaller than 2021. Been falling for years and accepting kids with lower ranked in the class. Try to stay current! i know you think NYU is easy but parents on the board just have dated and unsupported viewpoints. If your going to spend 70k or send your kid at least read the material put out by the school. The class of 2021 has 2827 students and class of 2022 has 2785 students. Are you saying that the school is shrinking???? Was a program closed? https://public.tableau.com/profile/birdmanobie#!/vizhome/OberlinIRQuickFacts/Story1 |
NYU is NOT a top school. It's just an overpriced mediocre private, equal to good state universities. |
In your unhumble opinion!! How old are you 50?? Is your opinion based on recent data or simply your belief? What data? Acceptance rates, graduate school placement, noble prize winning professors, graduate job placement, famous professors, billionaire alum, wall street job placement, med schools, International reputation, law schools, internships for students, other graduate schools???? Well by any of those metrics its a top school and dusts any state school any day. PP please tell me what the basis of that statement is other than ignorance! |
PP here. Not based on academic studies poring over mostly meaningless data. It's based on lived experience of navigating through the college application process of my child. An only child. Had I had more than 1, you'd have to take me out to the backyard and shoot me at the thought of going through another college application process. Based on my personal experience, students I know who got in also got into mid-level UCalifornia school system - but rejected by top CA college systems, including UCLA, UC Berkeley, and Cal State SLO. Cal State SLO is considered a top tier among second rate public college system in CA. It's a sample size of one HS, I admit. Nevertheless, it's based on my lived experience - and not based on meaningless ranking games you are referring to. (You shouldn't look down on mid-level UC school system. By any measure including nobel prize winners, mid-level CA universities can compete with NYU.) |
What are you talking about? Oberlin slightly under enrollment in 2017 and overenrolled last year. https://oberlinreview.org/16469/news/college-passes-enrollment-goal-for-class-of-2022/ With a small class, getting the exact right number is tough. |
So it’s old information I can only wonder how many years ago—and just your opinion based on 1 high school. I guess these California schools also have Tisch and Stern equivalents?? Doubtful indeed. Such a stirong statement based on nothing. Pp are you stupid?? Do you believe I’m fake news??? |
was anyone talking about CA schools no. No one cares...with few exceptions...go west |

It's possible that NYU is more selective than Oberlin, and it's possible that simply being in New York makes it a better option for students in some fields than Oberlin.
But, because of the low aid, it has a reputation for being full of snotty rich kids who aren't that serious about learning and probably aren't great employees. Another problem is that a lot of the West Village looks pretty terrible right now. I would only choose NYU over Oberlin if the NYU aid package were great, being in New York was critical or you knew a specific program was clearly better at NYU. |
