Phillips was the aggressor, not the peacemaker. He taunted the kids by walking into their group and staring them down. I don't care whether he is white, black, or red. I don't care if he served in the military or served jail time. He was out of line.

I think it really fair reporting and is not the typical liberal slant you get from that website. https://www.cnn.com/2019/01/21/us/maga-hat-teens-native-american-second-video/index.html'

I don't need CNN to summarize what happened for me to make up my mind.

They were a bunch of disrespectful kids.

Did you watch the video? Those black hebrews were calling them "children of incest" and "white crackers who can't stay in the sun for 5 minutes" and "school shooters." Disgusting behavior by the adults. The kids did nothing wrong. The Native American marched right into their space and THEY had nowhere to go.

Yes, I said above that those people were idiots too. What does that have to do with disrespecting an old man?

+ 1. One thing has nothing to do with the other.

It actually does have something to do with it, because people are interpreting the boys chanting and shouting as being towards the Native AMerican man (MR Phillips) when it seems they were yelling and chanting to and because of the the Black Hebrews. So if you think the boys are being disrespectful to Mr Phillips because you are hearing chants and shouts towards someone else, yes, it does make a difference.

The group surrounded him then and starting mocking the chanting. That's on video too.

Nathan Phillip literally put his body in between a mob of 100 white MAGA kids and group of four older angry Black Israelites when he witnessed a confrontation between them get heated.

For that act of valor, the MAGA kids' anger was directed at him instead.

You should watch the ENTIRE tape and make up your own mind, instead of relying on biased witness statements.

An open mind--try it out for a change.

I have watched numerous videos.

And I find it disgusting that the boy who stood there smirking is now lying that he was "praying" --- WHAT? In addition to being an entitled immature kid, he's also a mealy-mouthed liar. No one believes he was standing there praying. No one. Any psychologist, animal behavioralist, anthropologist of worth will tell you that his staring smirk was one of aggression, not peace and warmth.

Not an ounce of reflection, of looking inward, of humility in his statement. Not an ounce of wondering how they came across, this group of 100 loud obnoxious boys yelling and screaming, one of whom took his clothes off and made ape-like gestures, several of whom were doing tomahawk chop moves to the drum beats. Not a hint of apology for offending, even if it wasn't intentional. No suggestion that it would have been better to follow Jesus's command to turn the other cheek and ignore the 4 men yelling stupidities. No acknowledgment that the boy's rowdy behavior did not come across well especially at such a sacred place as they were. Not an ounce of recognition of Nathan Phillip's humanity, of his service to this country, of the fact that he came from a people who have been treated very badly by this nation and yet despite that he went on to serve it. Where are his Catholic religion teachers? Where is his priest? This statement is so contrary to Catholic teachings I just can't believe it.

I believed that by remaining motionless and calm, I was helping to diffuse the situation. I realized everyone had cameras and that perhaps a group of adults was trying to provoke a group of teenagers into a larger conflict. I said a silent prayer that the situation would not get out of hand.

This wasn't really media-driven story. It was completely driven by social media. When the media finally got involved, it was with interviews of Nathan Phillips. His story was worth reporting given his prominence in the incident. There could be a good case made that this event demonstrates the danger of social media mobs, but I don't think you have much of an argument for blaming the media.

I totally agree with you that this is the result of the social media mob. It has become dangerous.
But, I think the media could have done a far better job of reporting. Given the media frenzy last week about the BuzzFeed report, you would THINK that maybe the media would not be so quick to jump on a story without checking facts first.
They had Mr. Phillips interviewed on both MSNBC and CNN, apparently. Did either network reach out to anyone else who was present for another perspective? (I don't know if they did or didn't) Did the media reach out to the public at large seeking more video evidence? (once again - I don't know if they did or didn't)
The more frequently this happens in the media, the less the public will trust their stories. I was happy that many media outlets provided more information as more video surfaced. But, it took CNN way too long to acknowledge that there may be more to the story. And, I am not sure that MSNBC ever has.

The cheers those boys were chanting in the group were very familiar in that my son's school does similar cheers at sporting events. They did what they typical do at a football game. I could easily see my very respectful son standing in that crowd minus the MAGA hats. I feel bad that they are being branded for doing nothing wrong. The teen who stared at the provoking adult also did nothing wrong. He was attacked and remained calm.

Sounds like they need to do a little more self-reflecting and prayers for their own souls, maybe read the Bible a little more closely. I would suggest starting with Matthew 5-7.

Liberal - I agree. This story never should have been reported without interviewing more bystanders and the boy. I think the situation was probably ambiguous and the chaperones bear most of the blame.

The key point though is that the boys did not approach him.

He approached them. He got into their space with his music. He didn't just walk by, causing them to reach out and taunt him. He went up to a group of boys focused on their own thing (at that point they were doing school cheers). They were not interacting with him at ALL, and he inserted himself into the picture.

He got right up in their faces. He inserted himself into the events.

Now he is complaining he felt surrounded and they would not let him pass. Because he clearly needs to explain why he walked right into them.

That's bullshit. He had a clear route up the steps.

He WANTED to confront them.
