Don't be daft. Of course we are all aware of the "airline deregulation" that took place in the late 70s. It takes the feds out of the business of dealing with fares, routes and new airlines entering the market. I'm conservative and don't give a shit if they overbook, no limits needed. But you need to pay $$ for the seats if you bump people. You can't use police to force the consequences of your overbooking.

I also have happily gotten off for $800 before, but obviously that wasn't enough money in this circumstance.


They offered $800 in United vouchers. That's waaaaaaaaaaaay less than $800 in cold hard cash. The vouchers have restrictions, expiration dates, and can't be used to pay for taxes or other fees associated with airfares.

United needs to quit being cheapskates. They basically just beat this man up in order to save money. That's not how we do business in America. 'Eff them.

Sounds like a jilted lover set him up. Regardless, it was 14 years ago. He didn't lose his medical license and apparently there has been nothing since. I don't think this qualifies as sullying his reputation.

Why didn't the airline just re-book the flight attendants/crew on another airline when this one was full? Or why didn't they book this passenger on another airline? If they couldn't get the involuntarily removed passenger on another flight the SAME DAY on their own airline, then they should have sent him the same day on another airline (or sent their staff on another airline).

They were so out of line.

And for those who are looking to blame the victim here by digging around for negative stories about this man, just wait until we start getting all the unsavory stories about the United CEO, the three security officers, the United employees who were involved in the decision making, the four United employees who were willing to bump paying customers, etc. Everyone has things they don't want people to know about...cue the Access Hollywood audio tape...

Flights to Louisville are not as frequent as flights to DC.

Pretty much all countries do it. I'm sure the unions have something to do with it.

That said, I"m not sure having Emirates or however competing will help passengers at all. They'll need to either charge double what the US airlines charge to keep their high level of service, or cut back just like the rest of US airlines to compete price-wise.

There already is such an option to get Emirates-level service on a US airline -- fly first class.

Then they get to their hotel too late, and can't get in the 12hours of rest required before they can work the morning flight. The crew in question here is 2 pilots and 2 flight attendants.

Here's what I just don't understand.

If the United employees HAD to be on that flight in order to work the flight the next morning (and adhere to the rest requirements), why didn't United solicit 4 volunteers, give them some $$$ and then find an uber/taxi/car rental to get them back that night/early next morning? I have to imagine that there would be some volunteers that happily take the money if they got home very late that evening. I mean, it's like a 4 hour drive.
