All the people in agreement with the OP are stating very clearly that they don't know a single black or Latino person. There's also a lot of classism here. Those complaining about unfriendliness surround themselves only with others of high SES and believe that everyone else is invisible. |
Potomac people are lovely. Agreed. Bethesda? Not so much |
Yes, DC is the only city I've lived in where the culture is to not talk to or look at anyone on the metro, sidewalks, etc. I do get it though as usually the person who approaches you on the street is mentally ill or some college kid asking you for your signature. |
So you’ve never been to New York or Paris or London or Beijing? |
Sure, some people are friendly, but many are standoffish & won’t acknowledge strangers. I’ve gotten used to this after living in the DC area for many years. But when I return to my native southern state, I notice the contrast between there & DC because almost everyone there is so friendly & warm, even to strangers. It’s nice.

Yes! Or looking to kidnap their unruly, funny looking kid! LOL. |
IDK. Just because you carry the Goyard from five seasons ago, doesn't mean you are impressive. ![]() |
BAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. Good one! |
LOL, thank you for the laugh. You nailed it with "group personality disorder." I have found the same thing. I am as blue as blue can be through both my pedigree and cv, and you would not believe how many people try to "teach" me what they think I don't know about politics. I think it is mostly the transplants who are trying to entrench. They don't realize that most of us don't trumpet what/who we know because we don't need to. |
You could go south where everyone is pretending to be nice but it’s fake AF and they are petty and malicious as soon as you turn your back. People are reserved here. I’m fine with that. |
Guess you aren't from here. |
Where do you live? Are you part of the Chevy Chase Blessed Sacramemt crew? That’s a whole other level of snobbery. |
Same. Even in the MidWest. Also- Everyone who says they miss Midwest or Southern friendliness is white. |
People who live on the coasts *think* “flyover” is a slur. People who live in the middle of the country don’t care, and have adopted it as a badge of honor. Being ignored by the douches who live on the coasts is a good thing. |
I learned on DCUM that anything east of the Mississippi is east coast. |
